Afternoon in Hunter Valley

Introduction

Nice afternoon trip with T+D to Hunter Valley. My notes are very brief as I found the quality of most of those wines rather modest, and therefore the tasting not particularly interesting. The whites were simple and rather one-dimensional, the reds were thin but did not demonstrate particular elegance. Mostly table wine quality with unfavourable QPR.

  • 2010 Brokenwood Sangiovese 84 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Another simple table wine. Ruby red, not much of a nose, a rather sweet palate with red fruit. Short finish. The quality is at the level of a Chianti for USD7-10

  • 2010 Brokenwood Cabernet Merlot 88 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Found their entry level Cab blend quite good the other day so was curious to try their regular Cabernet Merlot. This is obviously a bigger wine as you can see in the darker color and the fuller body. Seems rather straight forward on the palate and finish. There is also plenty of oak that will take a few years to integrate. A solid effort and very young of course but I doubt this will develop into something truly interesting. 87-89

  • 2009 Brokenwood Shiraz 88 Points

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

    (1/28/2012)

A solid effort, benefiting from the more favorable region/climate compared to the Hunter Valley grown Shiraz we tried. Well rounded, medium body of dark fruits. Medium finish. Pleasant and very approable now
