A Few '95 and '96 Burgs

Introduction

I recently cracked a few cases to see how these are coming along. All three were rather sinew-y but none was too hard, dried out or in danger going "over the hill".

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1996 Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Decanted 2 hours. There was one firm chunk of sediment. The color is fresh and medium dark with a clear rim. Primary aromas are bright and sweet spiced with complex red berries, sandalwood and a touch of earth. The flavors are tight and firm without being too dry and are in the red spectrum featuring cherry, cranberry and a touch of sweet spice. The texture, while firm, is also slightly viscous. The tannins are all but absorbed and the finish is long and refreshing. Nice enough now with food but better in a few more years. 2015-2020.

  • 1995 Forey Père et Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Decanted for an hour and a half. Quite lightly colored and staring to show the amber hues of maturity. Nose of herb tea, potpourri with a tough of iron. Light, delicate flavors are on the dry side but there still some sweetness to the fruit with soft, dry cherry, sweetened tea and a bit of grip and structure. The wine finishes with more body than you would expect and while certainly ready to drink, it should not fall off the cliff anytime soon. Drink now - 2105.

  • 1995 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Véroilles 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Decanted 1 hour. Medium color showing just a bit of age. Complex and high-toned nose of savory herbs, camphor and some darker bass notes. Firm flavors of dark cherry, red plums and cinnamon are quite vibrant, bright and structured without being hard or unyielding. A wine of power and class that could use a bit more time in cellar but is coming around nicely. Drink 2014-2018.
