Introduction

It had been five days since I returned from Burgundy, so needed to have some great Burgundy with friends. This was just what I needed.

Flight 1 - White Burgundy (4 Notes)

Four whites, none oxidized, none corked! A great day.

Flight 2 - Red Burgundy (5 Notes)

  • 1991 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée Les Genaivrières 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Sensational perfumed start with spice, spring flowers and red cherry. Palate was more subdued showing mature red cherry and sweet cherry pie spice. "94 point" aromas with "88 point" palate for me tonight. Served blind, this was easily identified as from Leroy. Although I thought from 1990, not 1991.

  • 1993 Domaine Anne et François Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Open several hours before serving. Backward to start. Mostly black fruit, relatively rustic with very firm "1993" tannins. Not very forthcoming today. Power and subtle spice comes through on finish.

  • 1991 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Earthy and mushroomy aromas, then lean and direct flavors, showing red fruit and earthy character. Hints of licorice and black pepper.

  • 2006 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Open 6+ hours before serving. Ripe black cherry aromas and flavors with lush, sweet baking spice. Big and ripe with powerfully concentrated fruit. Impressive power and density. Better 2016 or later.

  • 2002 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Open 2+ hours before served, this needs lots more cellar time or decanter time. Aromas of black fruit, allspice, clove and anise. Spicy palate with concentrated red and black cherry flavors. Wonderful Asian spice follows through perfectly on finish. Big structure, very harmoniously integrated, even if very firm today.
