  • (Not a) birthday dinner (Hinsdale, IL): I had high expectations for this given the vintage, but alas, they were not met. Maybe this bottle wasn't sound. A bit volatile and stewy, but also a fair bit of angularity on the palate. It just doesn't feel well put-together, and air didn't seem to help much in terms of integration.

  • [Blind] Distinct Vosne spice, darker five spice, hoisin. Beautiful forward red and black fruit. Gorgeous perfume, highly expressive. After the reveal and thinking back to last week I would say this is darker and a little more brooding than that exceptional bottle of Aux Burlees, but certainly lots of overlap and similarity. Perfect bottle of this, excellent example. Clearly one of the best Clos Vougeots out there and from the greatest era at Meo.

  • Incredibly clean, even just looking at the ruby red colour in the glass, nothing muddled / dark or stormy here. Bright red and black cherry fruit. Distinct Vosne spice. Maybe not as aromatically showy as I recall from good bottles of Meo but the palate is near completely perfect. Refined, elegant, resolved, silky tannin, bright and sweet cherry fruit. Clean and surprisingly bright. Wood spice, nothing really in the way of sauvage / wild earthy character, shooting more for purity.

  • I snuck this into the program blind and couldn’t believe how well it was showing. The nose had excellent spice, a pleasant degree of integrated wood, and sweet and bright red cherry fruit. Surprisingly lifted as I find Meo can be dark and stormy sometimes. Palate is an a great drinking window as this was resolved and straightforwardly delicious in an unexpectedly lighthearted sort of way. This came after 1991 Leroy Richebourg and Musigny, and even in that unprecedentedly daunting shadow this managed to shine in its own way. Guesses narrowed in on Vosne quickly and centered around Echezeaux and included older Mugneret Gibourg. Thrilled with this actually. Meo might get put on Clos Vougeot in the Burgundy Fantasy Draft… 94 - 95.

  • Gave him 3 h of decanting. Cool wine, cherry, lovely nose, fresh, good body, amount of tertiary aroma, smooth tannin and acid, all in for a long life. I real enjoyed this a lot. High end pinot noir pleasure. No hurry
