Introduction

2nd dinner with Mr. K, M, T & R with the theme: Pinot. The wines are well spread across village - Grand Cru, all from Gevrey Chambertin. We started with a blanc de noir from Marie Courtin, a seriously made Champagne with lots of underlying energy and verve. For the Pinot flight, the quality / scale is obviously different between a village - Grand Cru. However, a village in a great vintage is always a good bargain, especially when it delivers drinking satisfaction close to a entry 1er Cru.

Flight 1 - Flight 1 - Marie Courtin (1 Note)

  • NV Marie Courtin Champagne Resonance Extra Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

    Alcohol :: 12%
    Opened for 8hrs. The aromas is rather cold and discreet but display great focus with precise layer of smoke, gun powder and citrus grapefruits. This has intense mineral purity with excellent tension on the mouth. I really like the focus here, grapefruits, citrus and fresh herbs all supported firmly by the solid acid backbone. Real energy leads to refreshing, juicy finish. It is a joy to drink this.

Flight 2 - Flight 2 - Gevrey Village - 1er Cru - Grand Cru (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Opened for 4hrs w/o cork on it and the wine was still tight and reductive. Thus I decided to double decanted for another 3hrs before served which is obviously doing good to the wine. Deep vibrant ruby red. Still a little bit shy, sweet on the core with red and black cherry, dark plum intermixed with soft aromas of meatiness, savoriness and earthiness. The palate is driven by excellent mineral structure with juicy sweet dark fruits and mild spiciness. Silky tannin, medium length finish that's very clean and pure. Savory and lots of concentration of fruits. Drinking beautifully with proper preparation but it will certainly improves more in the bottle. Outstanding village. 88-89+

  • 2009 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Alcohol: 13%
    Opened for 4hrs w/o cork on it and similar to the Fourrier, this is even tighter hence I double decanted this wine for another 3hrs before served as well. Medium ruby red, glossy. Cloves, licorice, mint, dark floral with savory meatiness, dark plum and earth added better complexity to it. Expressive and complex on the nose but not so on the palate. Medium bodied, this has plenty of dry extract to coat the mouth with excellent fruits concentration but currently still hiding underneath, along with new wood and spices. We decided to pour the rest to the decanter again and this decision was clearly help the wine to open up more. Tannin was in control but needs time to further integrate. Lovely weight and scale though, with long, intense finish which turns a little bit tighter with wood tannins and spiciness. 89-90+

  • 2002 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Opened for 4hrs w/o cork on it and double decanted for another 3hrs before served (same case wit the Fourrier and Trapet). Quite aromatic and complex but i thought this wine could offers more. Light ruby with brick rim. Lovely, almost airy aromas of smoke meat, licorice, sweet red cherry, dark plum, spice box, mint and earth, wild! Great focus and depth, also good scale but quite light on its feet. Very fresh, precise and well define. Mocha like complexity along with mineral and licorice. Long finish with good power and intensity. A good Mazis in an understated character.
