Tasted Saturday, April 21, 2012 by cab blends with 507 views

Introduction

Wines decanted for 2 hours.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 1995 Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Gran Reserva 80 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

The formal score does not give the wine it's full justice.(at least still an 86 I think) Although it has aged and probably near the end of its time, this was smooth and a favorite of many at the blind tasting. Brown and copper around the edges with an acidic nose with the dry rustic leather.A short finish but the smooth tannins were most enjoyable.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2003 Alto Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

Clean chalk dust nose although light brown but clearly smooth. Moderately long finish with solid tannins and a very slight hint of acid overtaking the old light fruit.

Flight 5 (1 Note)

  • 2007 Montes Purple Angel 91 Points

    Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley

Dark, dark red with a classic guava nose and enticing aroma for Chilean carmenere. I did not find this as stunning as I thought it would be given the hype and ratings. Needs aging and significant decanting. A harshness with a bitey finish. Good tannins - retasted after 3 days and the harshness is still there and the back end does not mellow. I don't think this will cellar well for many years so I will not buy cases to put away.
