Introduction

Tasted these wines single blind, and gave a guess at what I thought they were (more Cab or Merlot in the blend), and what I would feel comfortable paying for the wine (as well as the list price).

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2009 Leonetti Cellar Merlot Walla Walla Valley 90 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

Tasted single blind. Deep purple in color, this wine's nose shows a bit of heat upfront, then wet gravel, mint, a hint of black cherry, but very tight and unevolved. The palate is so very tense as well, with slightly tart black cherry fruit, mocha, and some minerality on the medium+ finish. There is obviously some pedigree here, but the cards are held tight to the chest. This wine isn't ready to drink for another 3-4 years, and will likely be quite delicious for the following 10-12 years. Would be a value at $45-50 (list $72). 88-90 pts, with room for improvement.

  • 2007 Long Shadows Wineries Merlot Pedestal 91 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Tasted single blind. Deep purple, revealing ripe red fruit on the nose, certainly brighter than the Leonetti Merlot, but still only mildly fragrant, there is a hint of charcoal embers in the upper register. Flavors are quite tightly wound, but with aeration in the mouth, yields notes of wet soil and wood, supple and velvety tannins in this full bodied red, showing moderate acidity and a nice dark fruit profile. There is a medium- finish, with a kick of nice vanilla at the end. Able to be consumed now, and over the next 15 or so years. Would be a value at $50 (list $56). 89-91 points.

  • 2008 Andrew Will Two Blondes Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

Tasted single blind. Deep purple, showing a more fragrant and generous nose of black currant, menthol, and coffee grounds. The palate shows jammy black currant and black cherry fruit, turning slightly tart as the wine aerates, and a noticeably higher acidity that comes with the tartness. A nice food wine, no heat from the alcohol on this lovely wine, it is still a bit backwards for my liking, and will take around 3-4 years to enter into a prime drinking window, after which I imagine it will show nicely for 10-12 years. A nice value at $50 (list price $67). 90-92 points.

  • 2007 Long Shadows Wineries Pirouette 94 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Tasted single blind. Deep purple in color, with a lightly fragrant bouquet of wet cement, blackberries, and mocha. This wine is extremely tannic and austere on the palate at the present time, showing loads of ripe (not overly sweet) black currant and black cherry fruit, and a lush mouthfeel, with notes of dark chocolate, a bit of smokiness. The teeth-staining tannins lead into a medium + finish lasting over 30 seconds, finishing with a pleasant hint of vanilla. Needs 5 more years in the bottle, then consume over the following 15 years. Bravo. A nice deal at $60 (list price $56). 93-94 points.
