Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 1958 Antonio Vallana e Figlio Spanna Montalbano 90 Points

Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Colline Novaresi

Verdant, woodsy bouquet that sits softly but expansively in the glass with a funky tinge of smoky hanging meat. The mouthfeel is dense and almost gummy in texture with notable amount of tannin still remaining.

  • 1955 Luigi Caldi Gattinara 50 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara

Extremely dark red color, but it's turned. Portlike smell of raisins and figs. Some hoisin-like sweetness but the palate is overwhelmingly vinegary. R.I.P.

  • 1974 Rainoldi Sfursat Flawed

Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Sforzato di Valtellina

Spoiled raisined smell and a thin, oxidized palate. R.I.P.

  • 1964 Franco Fiorina Barolo 86 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Bright transparent ruby color (and it oughtta be since I decanted it through a coffee filter on account of the crumbling cork), just starting to brown. High-toned herbal nose contrasts with very pure, light Nebbiolo fruit with a bit of tannin still hanging on.

  • 1964 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva 83 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Musky, earthy scents, then a supple, layered entry with almost spicy flavors.

  • 1964 Giacomo Conterno Barolo 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Cloudy light rose color in dramatic contrast to the darker '67, this was also lighter on the palate yet the smoothest, most elegant wine of the night, a waif of a Nebbiolo.

  • 1967 Giacomo Conterno Barolo 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Subtle aroma packed with mint leaves and briar becomes louder with air and develops scents of root beer, baseball-glove leather, tire rubber, and other junk you might have laying around in your garage. Still clearly tannic on the palate but tender and supple just the same, with a powerful, almost juicy finish.

  • 1971 Bianco Luigi & Figli Barbaresco 82 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Smells like a faded still-life painting: antique wood and must with a bowl of apples and rosemary. Dark and woodsy flavors on the entry with a smooth, glossy mouthfeel and a nice sticky grip.

  • 1971 Ceretto Barolo Grignore 84 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Well-intregrated pure fruit that's still fresh and round. Remarkably spicy finish -- not merely heat but a vivid flavor of red chili pepper.

  • 1971 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Strong green nose with an extremely complex palate of game, tobacco, and briar, finishing with fresh mint leaves and more greenery.
