Scott and Lilly were in town for Lollapalooza so we had them over with some other friends on Saturday for some wine before they went to the show. The wine was probably only outdone by the show Mother Nature put on for us. We sipped some of these wines on my balcony during a truly raging thunderstorm.
Great afternoon with some great wine and great friends.
1997 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses 93 Points
France, Champagne
Yeah, this is legit. The nose is enthralling with toasted nuts, sweet lemon, fresh pear and apple. Its palate had great verve, and energy to it displaying dense citrus, mousse, and baked bread. Followed this over a couple of hours and with air the mousse seemed to soften and the citrus really seemed to blossom. Great stuff.

2000 Dom Pérignon Champagne 92 Points

Super rich and concentrated with great hazelnut, mousse, pear and truffle notes. The palate buzzed with energy, and displayed a richness that really turned me on. If you're into french toast, you're gonna love this wine.

2010 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 91 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Needed some air to open up. Beautiful notes of pear, lemon zest, petrichor and dried white florals on the nose. The palate is dense for a Kabinett, but has buzzing acidity that kept the exotic tropical fruits in line. Great mango, passion fruit and peach tones make this a killer Riesling.

2008 Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz Siebeldinger Im Sonnenschein Ganz Horn Riesling Großes Gewächs 92 Points
Germany, Pfalz
A show-stopper from beginning to end. Incredibly precise and rich nose of peach, melons, fresh rain and white florals. The palate had richness of fruit and dense crushed stone and minerality that balanced it out. Easy to say this is head and shoulders above all over GGs I've had from Germany.

2002 Domaine Truchot-Martin Bourgogne 87 Points
France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
Another good bottle. This wasn't as good as the bottle I had the day before...much more acidic with less fruit and earth. With some air this took on more depth and character, but never really developed into the superstar Bourgogne we had yesterday.

2004 Domaine Truchot-Martin Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Slow ox'd for an hour, then decanted for two more hours before we began drinking. Incredibly earthy and rustic nose of mushroom, underbrush, red cherry, dry-aged beef and dried florals. The palate was beautiful - weightless on the palate but the flavor of an atom bomb. Great red fruit, dense earthy mushroom and damp earth comprised the palate. Hard to ask for much more from a 1er.
