Introduction
Dennis invited a group over to bring and taste Premier Cru wine from Cote de Beaune. Some people didn't quite get Burgundy's geography or classification system right, but otherwise a good tasting.
2002 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Tasted blind. sweet red cherry aromas, licorice and rosemary hints. Simple fruit on palate with some cherry cough drop hints. Slightly simple finish. Tasted blind, I was surprised to see this from 2002, thinking it from a leaner vintage.

1990 Domaine Mussy Beaune 1er Cru Montremenots 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasted blind. Mature ripe fruit - red and black cherry - well complemented by earthy and spice aromas. Identical on palate, with the finish somewhat more earthy. Fairly long and powerful. Impressive for its level.

Tasted blind. My Wine of the Night, the group's #2. Spicy red cherry and strawberry aromas with intense spice. Almost identical on palate, with very ripe, forward fruit flavors. Once unveiled, I thought this from the riper 1999. Slightly better than another bottle I opened a couple of weeks ago.

2002 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 90 Points

Tasted blind. Black fruit, still mostly fresh. Very firm and structured on palate, not particularly forthcoming today. I thought this from Corton because the tasting was supposed to be only wine from Cote de Beaune. Perhaps better in a few more years.

1991 Louis Jadot Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 88 Points

Tasted blind. Advanced color. Modest red fruit aromas with as much earth. Spice hints on both nose and palate. Reasonably advanced fruit on palate with a slightly short finish.

2003 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques 93 Points

Tasted blind. Another bottle not actually in theme, but this was the group's favorite tonight, my 2nd or 3rd favorite. Lots of ripe black fruit with some background Herbs de Provence. Big, robust blackberry and black cherry on palate, with everything in great balance. Long and powerful finish.

Tasted blind. Red fruit, some licorice, forest floor aromas. Fairly advanced fruit on palate, but still showing firm tannins and acidity.

1990 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot 89 Points

Tasted blind. Mature, ripe red fruit aromas with modest spice. Earthy aromas and flavors give it a slightly rustic character that made me think this was 1990 Pommard when tasted blind.
