Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2011 Blind Spot Chardonnay 84 Points

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

Clean fresh nose, some pear drops, apple and a slightly herbal note. Palate is apple and obvious cool temperature fermentation flavours. Commercial, clean wine-making but dull and uninteresting

  • 2006 Maison Bertrand Ambroise Ladoix 1er Cru Les Gréchons Blanc 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Ladoix 1er Cru

Mineral, citrus nose. Ripe rich body with depth and supporting oak tannin. Quite simple fruit, peach. There's a bitterness on the finish that suggests lots of skin contact.

  • 2008 Domaine Rollin Père et Fils Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses

Creamy hazlenut, light smoke nose with a pleasant fruit on the attack. On the tropical spectrum with pineapple and mango supported by light and considerate oak giving a smoky finish. The fruit lacks depth and is perhaps a little too lean but there is some elegance and charm.

  • 2004 Gagnard-Delagrange Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Boudriotte 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Clean, restrained, elegant, complex nose. Light hazlenut, peach and some tropical fruit. Good balance with very good oak integration. This is a smooth wine with no peaks or troughs so maybe not dramatically exciting but it is certainly enjoyable with a very long steady finish.

  • 2008 Felton Road Chardonnay Central Otago 87 Points

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Light citrus nose, clean fruit. Tropical fruit on the palate with lime ans smoke. This seems a bit disjointed at the moment and displays a hot finish but I think there is underlying potential that may be worthy of another look in 3-5 years time.

  • 2004 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Rich deep mature Chablis nose of asparagus and mushroom. Creamy, full bodied palate and roasted mushroom character with light oak. Steely acidity and well balanced. This is very enjoyable and ready to drink but will it age further?

  • 1999 Cullen Wines Chardonnay 93 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Deep golden colour. Rich, creamy wine with depth and complexity. Layers of tropical fruits play delightfully with the harmonious mellow oak. Tropical fruits, fig, nectarine, melon with a light honey drizzle and the merest whiff of an oxidative nutty character. Excellent wine that should continue to evolve

  • 2010 Uva Mira Chardonnay Single Vineyard 92 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

Lime, peach and hazlenut on the nose. Oak is well integrated and balanced. Vibrant wine that has a focussed acidity, clear minerality and depth of flavour. Peach, apple, creamy complexity and a smoky vanilla finish. Still very young and will benefit from ageing.

  • 2005 Petaluma Chardonnay 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Piccadilly Valley

Immediately appealing nose with character and interest. Minerality, kumquat, peach. Lively acidity interlaced with a creamy thread of ripe fruit. Focussed, concentrated, vibrant and full of energy. A hint of vanilla and smoke on the finish is the only oak giveaway in this accomplished wine.
