taste: lighter body with medium acidity. Almost all attack with zero finish and tones of white fruits, citrus tones, and red apples

overall: the palate is a real letdown for this. Nice complexity on the nose, but really lacking much of a mid or finish on the palate

  • 2009 Domaine Larochette-Manciat Pouilly-Fuissé Les Petites Bruyeres 83 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé

nose: fatter nose of pears, white fruits and apples with some oak as well. Decent depth, but the oak is noticeable.

taste: medium bodied with lower acidity and somewhat flabby. On top of that, there was some noticeable oak along with tones of pears and apples.

overall: if it weren't for the notes, I wouldn't have remembered this. Still, it isn't that great of a wine and there are many other white burgs out there to drink.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Meursault 88 Points

taste: tasty medium feel with medium acidity. Balanced with very good tones of pears, oranges and citrus tones.

  • 2009 Vincent Dancer Meursault Les Corbins 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

nose: well balanced nose of melons, white fruits, oranges and limes. Decent depth with a good amount of fruit on the nose.

taste: medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. A bit hollow on the mid-palate and backed up by tones of melons, citrus, white fruits, and oranges.

overall: if this can round out with a bit of age it could be a real nice wine. There is good balance to it right now and while the fruit is a bit upfront it isn't too ripe.

  • 2009 Maison Albert Bichot Puligny-Montrachet 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

nose: the fruit on the nose is on the riper side, but more with a freshness to it and tones of citrus, limes, white fruits, pears, and white florals. Nice depth for the level as well.

taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity. Balanced with solid depth and tones of limes, citrus, pears and white florals.

overall: A very good puligny. It has the ripeness to it of the vintage, but doesn't seem over ripe either. There is some room for improvement on it as some of the baby fat does need to trim off.

taste: medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity. Well balanced with nice depth and really good tones of white peaches, pears, and white fruits. This certainly has structure and is showing that structure.

overall: this is definitely young. It has real nice balance and tones on both the nose and palate. This is one that I would like to see in a few years if premox doesn't take it.

taste: fresh medium/full feel with medium acidity. Balanced with good tones of citrus, white fruits, and minerals. Showing some depth, but not coming off as fully showing

overall: this needs to either be decanted or given time. Doesn't seem like a long haul wine, but it could well use 3-5 years.

nose: nice aromatic and lifting nose of white florals, peaches, pears, white fruits and a touch of oak tones. The oak is only slightly there, but is noticeable.

taste: medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity. There is good balance on the palate with white florals, pears, and white fruits. No oak at all on the palate.

overall: A really good chassagne. The aromatics are nice on this and the oak doesn't follow through at all. This could be a real nice one if the oak fully integrates

  • 2009 Vincent Dancer Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tête du Clos 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

nose: somewhat reduced nose of white fruits, pears, toast, and citrus tones. Good depth behind some of the reduction.

taste: medium/full body with medium+ acidity. The acidity is a bit mouthwatering along with tones of white fruits, pears, citrus tones and marmalade.

overall: this needs to be decanted for a bit before drinking. The reduction isn't that bad, it just needs a bit to blow off.

  • 2009 Maison Champy Meursault 1er Cru Blagny 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

nose: there is a more forward way to the nose with classic meursault tones of roasted nuts, blood oranges, lemon peels and some citrus tones as well.

taste: medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. Balanced with tones of roasted nuts, blood oranges and some citrus tones too.

overall: the 09 vintage does show, but meursault shows as well. It could use a little bit of time to take some baby fat off, but it isn't a long term ager.

  • 2009 Maison Albert Bichot Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Domaine Long-Depaquit 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

nose: showing off real grand cru class depth and aromatic tones of citrus, flinty notes, crushed rocks, white fruits and floral tones.

taste: medium bodied, but on the lighter side of medium with noticeable medium+ acidity. The acidity isn't searing, but it's there and it's noticeable along with tones of crushed rocks, citrus, and white fruits.

overall: Certainly shows it's grand cru class. The acidity isn't as piercing as some young chablis do in their youth. The fruit has more of a a rounded tone as opposed to over ripe.

  • 2009 Maison Albert Bichot Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Domaine Long-Depaquit 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

nose: straight forward and not all too deep with tones of minerals, white fruits, and lemon zest

taste: lighter bodied with medium acidity. It comes off as slightly flabby with tones of citrus, minerals, and citrus.

overall: fairly forgettable, but not a bad chablis. It's missing the acidic backbone and isn't all too deep either.

  • 2009 Maison Albert Bichot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Domaine du Pavillon 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

nose: very good depth with somewhat forward style to it and tones of navel oranges, red apples, pears, white fruits and citrus tones as well. Holding back slightly, but still fairly giving right now.

taste: full bodied with medium+ acidity. Excellent depth, though the acidity and body are showing the youth of the wine. Still, the tones of oranges, red apples, white fruits and citrus are well balanced.

overall: This certainly does have room to improve. The acidity is noticeable and does need to come more into balance. There is really good materials in place to become something extremely good.

  • 2009 Maison Albert Bichot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine du Pavillon 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

nose: though on the tight side, the grand cru class and depth is apparent with excellent tones of creams, warm oils, citrus, white fruits and navel oranges.

taste: full bodied, but very balanced as well with medium+ acidity that is on the sharp side. The depth and class shows through again with great tones of creams, citrus, white fruits and navel oranges.

overall: This is a real quality corton charlie at a young age. Certainly needs some time to grow into itself. Hard to say how much of a long distance runner it will be because of premox and the vintage. But, it can certainly improve with a bit of time.

  • 2009 Domaine Pernot-Bélicard Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

nose: there is a nice freshness to the nose with tones of citrus, limes, mineral tones and white fruits. Decent 1er depth and not as fat as some other 09s.

taste: there is very good balance to this with a medium feel and medium+ acidity. There is nice depth with tones of citrus, limes, and white fruits.

overall: Not the most complex white burg, but a very nice one. It does need to shed some baby fat to fully come together though.

  • 2009 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

nose: tight, but showing off grand cru depth with pure tones of lemon curds, oranges, pain grille, nutty tones and white fruits. This is a real lovely nose even with it being tighter right now.

taste: full bodied with noticeable medium/high acidity. There is richness to this, but the acidity provides a real spine as well with deep tones of lemon curds, pain grille, nutty tones, and white fruits.

overall: This definitely does need some time. Still, it's a real budding beauty that should reward patience if the premox bug doesn't strike it.

nose: focused and linear nose with deep tones of white fruits, floral tones, citrus tones, minerals and various cream tones as well. It is tight right now, but shows a lot of class and precision.

taste: very youthful full bodied feel with medium/high acidity. Very well balanced with tones of white fruits, florals, citrus tones, minerals with some oils and creams. Very classy and deep with a precision to it as well.

overall: This needs a good amount of time. It's a stunner now, but can be something truly special in the future.

Flight 3 - Red Burgundy Village and lower (8 Notes)

  • 2009 Vincent Dancer Pommard Les Perrières 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard

nose: robust and darker nose of earth tones, dark berries, spices and dark red fruits. Nice depth, but also a bit on the tight side.

taste: medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity and gripping tannins. Extremely young and a bit punishing with tones of dark red cherries, earth tones, and spices.

overall: this does need some laydown time. It's rough around the edges on both the nose and palate.

  • 2009 Domaine Latour-Giraud Pommard Cuvée Carmen 90 Points

taste: nice and silky medium body with medium+ acid and some chewy tannins. Very good balance and nice depth with tones of dark red fruits, spices, and berry tones.

overall: could be something really good with some more age to it.

  • 2009 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Chambolle-Musigny 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

nose: nice and feminine nose with tones of red fruits, fresh picked berries and a touch of red florals as well. Nice depth with a more red fruit core to it.

taste: pretty, but holding back, medium feel with medium+ acidity and tones of red fruits, fresh picked berries, red florals, and some hints of spice tones on the back end. Good village depth on the palate as well.

overall: it's deceptively open to drink in a sense. The attractive red fruit core can possibly fool in my opinion. This needs some time to fully come into harmony and show what it really has to offer.

  • 2009 Domaine Collotte Chambolle-Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

nose: nice red fruited nose of red licorice, red berries, red fruits and cherries. Solid depth on the nose, but on the lower end for a village level wine and it's not that feminine either.

taste: there is good balance and tension to this for the level with a smooth medium body and medium/high acidity with some sneaky tannins. The tones are red fruit based with notes of red berries, red fruits, and cherries.

overall: Personally, I would've liked more of a feminine touch to this and some more florals. Kinda felt that it more showed the vintage than the terroir. It is wound tight right now and does need some time to fully come into form.

  • 2008 Camille Giroud Santenay 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay

nose: there is an earthiness to the nose, but also a fresh quality to the fruit with tones of dark berries, spices, dark red fruits, and earth tones. Lacking some depth though.

taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity and some good tannins. The structure is there and there is good balance to the tones of dark berries, spices, and dark red fruits.

overall: A solid and straight forward santenay. Has some earthen characteristics while having some nice fruit as well. This could use a little time as it is a nice village wine.

taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity and good chewy tannins. It's youthful with balanced tones of spices, dark red fruits, and berry tones.

overall: this is a really nice volnay. Well balanced with good aromatics, this does need some time to fully show. Somewhat demure with a nice elegant touch to it.

nose: aromatic and hi-toned with notes of cherries, red fruits, fresh picked berries and raspberries. Nice balance and depth though on the tight side.

taste: pretty medium body with medium+ acidity. Good depth for the level with tones of red fruits, spices, cherries, some roses and fresh picked berries.

overall: this is a real pretty wine that is on the deceptive side right now. It's aromatic and pretty, but there is much more that it can give. Needs some time to unfold and show off the nuance.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

nose: very perfumed, though tight, with tones of dark red fruits, vosne spices, red florls and some red cherries. Very nice depth and very vosne at the same time

taste: medium bodied with medium/high acidity and youthful tannins. The structure is a bit unforgiving, but the feel is lovely with tones of red fruits, vosne spices, and fresh berry tones.

overall: A very pretty young vosne. Classy with the feminine touch that one would want. This is obviously in need of time. There is some real nuance to it, so it will probably need bit longer to fully show.

taste: medium bodied with big tannins and high acidity. Balanced with good depth, but the structure is overpowering right now. Still, there are really good tones of dark red fruits, spices and raspberries with a touch of earth.

overall: Clearly a young wine. This needs time, but the framework is here for a very stylish clos vougeot.

nose: very dark on the tones with a largeness to them. Balanced though with tones of spices, dark red fruits, red florals, and a lot of black cherries.

taste: balanced medium/full body with medium+ acidity and tones of spices, red fruits, and black cherries. Nice depth and not as large on the palate.

overall: Wasn't fully sure what to make of this one. Pretty big on the nose, but more deft on the palate. Time could be very kind to it as it harmonizes further.

taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity and tones of dark red fruits, cherries, and spice tones with a touch of earth. Good depth with good tannins as well.

overall: Youthful and in need of time. But, it's a lovely wine that has an attractive dark fruit streak to it.

nose: there's a dark red fruit core underneath a rustic backdrop with tones of dark red fruits, earth tones, brown spices and dark red cherries. Good depth, but it is holding back a bit on the nose.

taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity and some sneaky tannins. There's a nice underlying structure with tones of dark red fruits, earth tones and dark red cherries.

overall: this needs some time to shed the fat. There is a riper quality to it due to the vintage, but this is still very much a NSG. This could use at least another 5-8 years and drink for a long time.

USA, California, Central Coast, San Benito County

taste: full bodied with lower acidity and chewy tannins. Rich and ripe on the dark fruit side with tones of oak, dark red cherries, and liqueur notes.

overall: The oak is more prominent than is normally my taste. A decent cab, but not much more than that.

Flight 6 - Rhone and Piedmont (10 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

nose: there is a real gamey element to the nose with tones of meats, dark red cherries, charcoal and spice tones. Nice depth to it with an open knit style as well.

taste: very well balanced and poised full body feel with good tannins and medium acidity. There are good tannins to it right now, but they aren't overbearing along with tones of roasted meats, game, charcoal, dark red fruits, and spice tones. Good complexity, but not in that great chave depth.

overall: this is young, but it isn't a long distance chave. Still, it could use a few years to fully come together. It shows off the more raw and meaty side of chave while still being elegant.

  • 2006 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

nose: very aromatic and classic with tones of bacon fat, dark red cherries, charcoal, violets, and dark red fruits. It's on the tighter side, but is well balanced and there is nice depth.

taste: full bodied with medium+ acidity and chewy tannins. The tannins are a bit rough right now, but the feel is really sexy with elegant tones of bacon fat, dark red cherries, roses, violets, and some charcoal tones as well.

overall: This is young, but it's also a very elegant cote rotie. No surprise that a jamet would lean that way and this can be something very lovely with proper age.

  • 2007 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

nose: upfront and forward nose of red licorice, cherry liqueur tones, red fruits, and spice tones. More balanced than before, but ripe and lacking depth.

taste: forward with a medium/full body and tones of red licorice, cherry liqueur, red fruits, spices and black currants as well. The tannins are there, but far from overpowering.

overall: Smoothed out a little bit and didn't seem so run away on the fruit. Still, it's a forward wine and it doesn't bring a lot of depth either. It doesn't seem all *that* much better than the base cuvee.

taste: balanced medium body with medium acidity. Some nice supporting tannins with tones of funk, dark red cherries and spices. Not the deepest on the palate either.

  • 2008 Montaribaldi Barbaresco Palazzina 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

nose: hi-toned and aromatic nose of roasted herbs, red fruits, tar, cherries and spice tones. Good complexity, but lacking some depth.

taste: medium bodied with medium/high acidity. Very young with the tannins being coarse as well. Still, there are fresh tones of roasted herbs, red fruits, tar, and spice tones.

overall: It has a nice and pretty quality to it. Certainly needs some time and it would be nice if some depth could be added. Still, a pretty nice value barbaresco with a higher toned style to it.

  • 2007 Montaribaldi Barbaresco Sorì Montaribaldi 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

nose: there is some more intensity on the nose with tones of red fruits, cherries, berries, and spice tones. The vintage is showing through on this as well the barrique.

taste: the oak intensity shows again with some woody tones as well as red fruits, cherries, roasted herbs, cherries and spice tones. The tannins are sneaky with a good medium feel and medium/high acidity.

overall: This could use some time to smooth out. Both the nose and palate show the vintage and the barrique influence. But, it's not overt and it works.

  • 2004 Schiavenza Barolo 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

nose: the oak is noticeable from the outset along with tones of dark red cherries, spice tones, and roasted herbs. The oak isn't over burdening the nose, but it's certainly there.

taste: there is a real plushness to the medium feel and medium+ acidity. There are good tannins to this along with tones of dark red cherries, spice tones and some roasted herbs. The oak is there a bit less on the palate.

overall: this is a really nice young barolo. If the oak can integrate, it should be a real pretty one once it comes together more.

Closing

Well, there definitely was a lot to taste. I skipped out on a lot of stuff to mostly focus on the burgundy. I could've spent 4 hours trying to taste through everything, but there was another tasting across town to hit up.
