Holed Up Vs. Hurricane Sandy

Tasted Tuesday, October 30, 2012 - Wednesday, October 31, 2012 by isaacjamesbaker with 417 views

Introduction

Hurricane Sandy is releasing its fury on the East Coast. I’m holed up in DC, and I’ve got water, batteries, plenty of food and, of course, wine. The wines were shared at my apartment with friends and also at Domaine Wine Storage.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2011 Hermann J. Wiemer Dry Riesling 88 Points

    USA, New York, Finger Lakes

    (10/30/2012)

Bob brought this over and we enjoyed it a lot. Aromas of yellow apple, apricot and a hint of honey. The palate shows medium acid and lots of bruished orchard fruit. Hints of apricot and honey linger on the finish. It reminds me of a Pfalz riesling from a warmer vintage. Lacking in just a bit of the minerality I'm used to in German rieslings, but this wine is clearly well-made and quite impressive. Hermann Wiemer is one of the best riesling artists on the East Coast of the U.S. and I need to drink more of his wines. Val: "I loved that riesling!"

  • 2010 Gerard & Pierre Morin Sancerre Le Chêne Marchand 90 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

    (10/30/2012)

This is a superb, albeit young, Sancerre. Lots of apples on the nose, minerals, sea shells and notes of green onion and mint. On the palate, tart acid meets ripe fruit, and it equals freshness. Minerals, slate and lemon curd flavors abound. This is a strong wine that could use another two years to tame down, but very impressive.

  • 2002 Château Pontet-Canet 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    (10/30/2012)

The bottle had been open for nearly 48 hours by the time I tasted it, and I'm glad because this wine is still very young. Aromas of plums, cassis, loam, pencil lead and roses. The palate shows pure plum fruit, grainy tannins and medium acid. Lots of pencil shavings, graphite and tar. Quite delicious, but clearly still a young Pauillac. Some classic structure and flavors, and I'd like to try it again in a decade.

  • 2007 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Cent-Vignes 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    (10/30/2012)

Pretty ruby color. Aromas of cranberries, sweet cherries, candied plums, wet leaves and a hint of bacon. The palate shows nice grip with chewy tannins and medium acid. The sweet cherry and licorice flavors, and the brightness of the wine in general, remind me of Oregon pinot noir. Very fresh and bright with a nice peppery finish. Bob wasn't a big fan of this wine, but I thought it was a decent Beaune, better than most 2007s I've had.

  • 2006 Domaine Roblet-Monnot Volnay Saint-Francois 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

    (10/30/2012)

Much more expressive than when I tasted this in 2010, but it's still very young. Aromas of cassis, black cherries, tar and hints of game and gravy. The palate is tight and compact, with gritty tannins amd medium acid. Flavors of plums, soil and mineral add serious complexity. Sage and pepper linger on the finish. I'd like to try this again in a year or two.

  • 2010 Domaine Collotte Fixin Les Crais de Chene Vieilles Vignes 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin

    (10/31/2012)

Aromas of sweet cherries, violets, earth and hints of herbs. Very bright aromas. The palate is very bright and full of acid and fine tannins. Flavors of licorice, cranberries, topsoil and pepper. This wine has compact flavors, lots of grip but somehow it maintains elegance. Young and powerful, this will improve for five years easily.

  • 2011 Château Montfin Corbières Carignena 83 Points

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières

    (10/30/2012)

Smoky plums and pepper on the nose. Sweet plum, black cherries and leather flavors on the palate. Medium tannins and acid. Pretty straightforward Languedoc blend, seems like a good party wine.
