Flight 1 (2 Notes)

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Château Haut-Batailley

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A nice surprise. Exceeded my expectations. Still had depth and fruit. Still in balance. Excellent perfume of mature tertiary aromas layered over fruit. But in the sunset of its life. As good or better than the Lynch Bages 1997.

  • 1990 Château Beychevelle

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

An uninspiring wine, memorable only for its mediocrity. Tired. Strong asparagus notes. Fully mature years ago. I wrote a tasting note two years ago stating that this wine was in the sunset of its life. The sun has set.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1998 Château Trotanoy

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

From magnum. Closed. Showed no signs whatsoever of maturity. A massive, extracted wine. Broad shoulders. Loads of fruit and tannin.

  • 1998 Château Angélus

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Open compared to the Trotanoy. Lush and modern. Still quite young, but rounding out. Perfumed. Good focus and precision. Fresh and pure fruit flavors. A "clean" wine.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 1996 Château Latour Grand Vin

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Still young and tight. Unevolved in its flavors and aromas. But it has rounded out enough to make it accessible. Not giving up much, though. Not recommended to drink now. Solid core. Precise. Focused. More elegantly styled than expected - as opposed to sheer power.
