Introduction

Our annual trip to MdC! Great friends, Great skiing and why not some great food and wine!

Flight 1 - Lunch at Cascina Zeledria - http://www.zeledria.it/ristorante.php (1 Note)

Well run, Nona's cooking just off the slopes. A very nice break!

  • 2009 Foradori Granato

Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

    (1/18/2013)

Tasted off a ski slope and a "touch" on the cold side hence no rating this time. Fresh, fruit forward, ripe, oaky notes and easy to drink now. Nice but don't overpay though.

Flight 2 - Il Gallo Cedrone - http://www.ilgallocedrone.it/ (5 Notes)

Our favorite restaurant in MdC. Easily michellin star level (dnt think it has one but it deserves it), great food and an amazing wine cellar at great prices. A must visit if in MdC

  • 1995 Cantina Terlan Chardonnay Rarity 95 Points

Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano

    (1/18/2013)

Always such a special experience when we try these wines. Aged for 10 years in stainless steel and 3500 bottles a year.
The colour shows a bit of age! Mineral, light vanilla (interesting given no oak) , ripe fruit, vibrant, deep and complex. Long finish. Simply amazing. 94/95

  • 1999 Cantina Terlan Terlano Nova Domus Riserva 91 Points

Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano

    (1/18/2013)

Blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio & Sauvignon Blanc. We believe the chardonnay is oak aged.
The colour shows a bit of age but from the first whiff on the nose this is so fresh! Vibrant, alive with a sharp ness to it, good fruit but lacks in definition and complexity. A very interesting wine but we prefer their chardonnay bottlings that are 10yr aged in stainless steel before bottling. 91 for this one though

  • 2001 Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 92 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    (1/18/2013)

Decanted for about 30 minutes. The wine is on the young and has a lot way to go. Dark in colour dense and glossy. The nose is open from the start and full on amarone, with dense ripe fruit, Nothing overdone here though, this is a pure, well made amarone with finesse. Medium in body, lush on the palate, vibrant and with a lot of life ahead. A "lowish" 92 for the moment but this can easily be a 94 in the future. Drink from now but ideally wait 3-5years.

  • 2010 Franz Haas Moscato Rosa 89 Points

Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

    (1/18/2013)

Had by the glass at the end of a long dinner at the beautiful Gallo Cedrone in Madonna di Campilio. Medium/light weigh, sweet core, feminine desert wine to quote Nicol. Nice and enjoyable but thats about what we remember.

Flight 3 - Chalet Fiat - http://www.chaletfiat.com/ (4 Notes)

An instritution, and no MdC trip is ever complete without a long late lunch at Chalet Fiat. Ski like a teenager in the morning and roll up to the peak of Spinale ( a run down the Schumacher run is essential prior to lunch) and go to Chalet Fiat at 2pm and let your self go at the hands of Dante the Great! Such a joy! Good Luck getting down although the gondola is an option too..NOT!

Flight 4 - Il Gallo Cedrone - http://www.ilgallocedrone.it/ (3 Notes)

No need to change. The best is still the best .

  • 1996 Cantina Terlan Chardonnay Rarity 91 Points

Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano

    (1/19/2013)

Probably the only average of these wines we have tried ( tried 93,94,95,96,98) . The usual 3340 bottles made, 10yrs aged in stainless steel and bottled in 2006. Unfortunately lacks the depth and minerlity that so defines its kin. The ripe fruti is there but this is a shadow of what these bottlings can achieve (we usually rate these ~95). 91

  • 2001 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

    (1/19/2013)

Young, very early in its drinking window. We decanted it for 30 minutes (restaurant purchase) but ot did very little to "relax" this wine. Dark dense in colour. Youthfull. The nose is open, bordeaux-esque, quite a bit of sweet notes from the oak. On the palate it is young and tannic, sharp and reserved. The density of fruit is there and has the stuffing to go a long way but at this stage it is not very giving. An old school supertuscan that requires aging. A low 92 from us at the moment but has a lot way to go and for sur ewill improve. 92+ and wait a few more years.

  • 2002 Poderi Morini Albana di Romagna Passito Innamorato 89 Points

Italy, Emilia-Romagna, Albana di Romagna DOCG

    (1/19/2013)

Had by the glass. Dark yellow in colour. Floral notes to start but plum notes dominate the nose. Quite viscous and firm on the palate, with weight and with 13% alc to go with it. Caramel and honey notes conclude the palate experience. 89
