Introduction

Several of us braved a snowstorm to meet up with Matt for his birthday dinner. This had morphed through several themes with us basically ending on a burgs and Loire theme by accident.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • NV Jean Bourdy Crémant du Jura 88 Points

    France, Jura, Crémant du Jura

Nose: This is very crisp and aromatic with very good tones of lemon zest, pears, white fruits, and some mineral tones as well.

Taste: There is nice balance to the tones of lemon zest, pears, and some underlying mineral tones. This also has a very good medium body along with medium+ acidity.

Overall: This was a very enjoyable cremant. I liked the mineral streak on both the nose and palate, but it could've used a little more depth.

  • 2002 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon 90 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

Nose: Mature and refined with tones of lanolin, tart pears, honeysuckle, and vanilla tones as well. There is very good balance as well with nice depth.

Taste: There is a very nice medium feel, but acidity isn't too crisp and is lacking a bit for me. Still, there are nice round and mature tones of melons, vanilla, lanolin, and honeysuckle.

Overall: This was a real nice Baumard. Some crisper acidity would've helped, but this was very enjoyable and balanced.

  • 2006 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny 92 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

Nose: There is a really pretty herbal backdrop that is noticeable right away along with tones of red fruits, red florals, berries, and red cherries.

Taste: Medium bodied with dusty tannins and medium+ acidity. The feel is very pretty with silky tones of herbs, red fruits, red florals, red cherries, and spices.

Overall: This is a gorgeous wine. There is a real elegance to it on both the nose and palate. It's on the young side and should age well, but it's also really good right now.

  • 1999 Domaine Roblet-Monnot Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Nose: The nose has a real nice perfumed quality to it with tones of earth, dark red fruits, spices, and black cherries.

Taste: The medium body has a real good attack, but thins out on both the mid-palate and finish. The tones of dark red cherries, earth, and spices are very nice, but the lack of mid-palate hollows the tones.

Overall: I don't think it was a flawed bottle as much as the palate is lacking. It shows it's 1er quality on the nose, but there was nothing about the structure to make it seem like it will fully flesh out.

  • 2002 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

Nose: The nose is very perfumed with tones of dark red fruits, spice tones, red cherries, perfumes, and all sorts of red and purple floral tones.

Taste: Medium bodied with good tannins and medium+ acidity. The tones of red cherries, various red and purple florals, incense, and spices are very balanced and with grand cru depth.

Overall: This feels like its still a few years away from being at its best. It is showing very pretty right now, but does need some air.

  • 2003 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

Nose: Shows off the vintage with brighter tones of tart red cherries, red berries, spices, and red florals. There is nice depth with a primary quality to the tones.

Taste: While there is a more forward quality to the medium feel, there is a real sexiness as well. There is medium acidity and some good tannins along with tones of tart red cherries, red berries, spices and some strawberries as well.

Overall: This was a lot of fun. It shows off the flashier side of the vintage, but it's far from overdone. This is still very young and needs time to fully show itself.

  • 2006 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

Nose: There is a very attractive and hi-tones quality to the tones of spices, licorice, red fruits, berries, earth tones, and red cherries.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity and chewy tannins. This is showing young with tones of red fruits, berries, red cherries, and some earth tones.

Overall: This is obviously quite young. I gave this some real time in the ass so it could open up. There is a lot to like and it should be a beautiful wine when it's mature.

  • 2008 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

Nose: Very well balanced and showing good depth for a village wine along with tones of white fruits, vanilla, acacia flowers, and some red apples.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. While youthful, there are well balanced tones of white fruits, acacia flowers, red apples, and tones of vanilla.

Overall: This is a really good village Puligny. It shows better than its origins and is showing well right now.

  • 2007 Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant 91 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières-Coulée de Serrant

Nose: There is very good complexity to the nose with tones of biscuits, white fruits, pears, wax, and green apples.

Taste: Medium/full bodies with tart medium+ acidity. There is a roundness to the tones of biscuits, wax, green apples, and some lanolin.

Overall: This was my first experience with a Joly. It was a very enjoyable wine that was different from any savennieres I've had.
