Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 1988 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Very broad and powerful fruit aromas and flavors, less fresh and crisp than I recall from prior bottles, but still exciting based on density, persistence and length.

  • 2002 Etienne Sauzet Montrachet 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Dark color with plenty of oak spice and mature stone fruit aromas. Similar on palate but overall better with more balance. Good length, minerality and acidity hold everything together nicely. Not nearly as fresh or exciting as another bottle from the same case from last year.

  • 2002 Morey-Blanc Montrachet 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Stunningly good tonight. Slightly floral start with apple, pear and some lemon curd aromas. Same intense fruit flavors with great density and power. This displays incredible length and persistence, slowly evolving, picking up more spice on finish.

  • 2005 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Fresh apple, some pear with a little mint on nose. Similar fruit on palate with good textures coming through on finish.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2001 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Popped and poured, this showed great density and concentration with powerful, brooding black fruit and meaty spice. But was very backward, needing another decade in the cellar or 3+ hours in a decanter, so tough to fairly assess.

  • 1988 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Very sad, this was corked. So sad, the Beze 1988 is one of my favorite wines ever from Jadot when tasted 4 or 5 times before.

  • 1993 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Open approx 4-5 hours before serving, not decanted. Meaty spice aromas with a good balance of black and red fruit with mushroom elements. Slightly less evolved on palate, with lots of power and supporting structure from start to finish. Very impressive today, this wine is certainly still improving.
