Introduction

An evening for chilling and relaxation, with theme of 2003 Bordeaux. As it had turned out, it was fun and filled with constant laughters. Thanks for a great time to Roger, Elsa, Karen, new friends in Louisa and Roger, great hosts from Samson and Gina at Metro.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Prieuré-Lichine 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

This dark ruby red (almost purple) claret has a complex nose with floral, truffle, earth, cocoa, and light cigar. Medium+ bodied, ripe, soft, smooth tannins, with notes of ripe fruit, black cherry, coffee and wood. A very pleasant wine, yet finish is a bit short.

  • 2003 Château Léoville Barton 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Beautiful dark ruby red, with a charming nose of smoke, incense, cedar wood, anise, plus a bit of vanilla, floral and tobacco. Barton has gradually become a favorite of mine, as often experienced, great structure and balance to the body and texture of the wine. On the palate, there are notes of ripe dark fruits, cigar box and jam. Round, velvety, tasty tannins give you a rich, plush, satisfying month feel. And the finish is long, with leather, tobacco leaf and plum. This is simply brilliant.

  • 2003 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Not sure if its bottle variation, but this bottle had a rather strong display of alcohol, which kinda dimished some of the good showing elements of the wine. First on the nose, typical yet wonderful notes of spring floral, ripe currants, violet, hint of mineral. Texture on the palate was soft and elegant, with coffee, truffle, jammy plum. Medium finish. This wine could still use some cellar time and should have a stronger showing then.

  • 2003 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Sexy, soft feminine bouquet of vanilla, cigar, cedar, crushed stone, black currants, simply beautiful. Balance and structure of the wine is elegant and rich, taste of spicy oak, leather, vanilla, bitter cocoa bean, ripe raspberry and wet earth. Tannins are quite noticeable, but finely integrated and tasty. Rewarding long finish with dark fruits, tobacco leaf and spice. A tiny bit of heat shown near the end.

  • 2005 Château Rieussec 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

This was delicious and satisfying. My first true tasting experience with sauternes, I think I can only judge this one on my overall feel of the tasting itself. Light gold color, with nose of apricot, cream bulee, honey, marmalade, fresh chrysanthemum floral, some grained coffee developed with air time. On the palate, rich, dense, sweet yet excellently balanced by the acidity, keeping it fresh and uplifting. Finish was long and filled with sweet honey and hint of coconut.

Closing

The wines were great in themselves, and they had beautifully complimented a joyful evening for everyone. Thanks to Samson for the Pavillon Rough and Prieure-Lichine, very nice 2003s. Thanks to Gina as well, for the delicious 2005 Rieussec that brought true satisfaction to everyone. A special thank you note to the wonderful couple, Nigel and Louisa, fun and knowledgeable on wines and sharing with us many fun things in life beside the jewel in the glass. Oh, and the japanese whisky... it was AWESOME!
