  • Nice bottle, good condition. Slightly brown/orange colored. The nose is a drug - wet earth, leaves, wood, mushrooms, tobacco, leather, dried black cherries. The palate is good, but the tannins are very drying at the end. If the tannins would be more on the "sweet" side, this would be extraordinary. So it is all in all a good bottle. 94 pts. for the nose, 90 pts. for the palate. Very good 92 pts. considering the price, but I like the 2002 more...

  • Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Baked black fruits, sweet spice, slight raisins, a little cream and ripe plum, touch of polished oak. Quite ripe on the palate with those baked fruits and a touch of raisin, tight but talc textured tannins, alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.

  • Again I did stupid mistake and I decanted this wine for only 20 minutes, just to separate sediments. It turned out that this was not enough to open its full potential. So again, wine review is based on the third glass. If a smell could kill this one would be in top 10. Incredibly strong aromas of tobacco, leather, smoke. Also cassis, oak, vanilla, earth ( nice!), black currant ( strong!), cedar. I think it's enough. Taste - silky texture, no surprise, it's Margeaux! Surprise: vivid acidity and tannins.
I would expect softer and gentle acidity and tannins in 19 years old wine.
Fortunately we have sweet flavors of plum and black cherry. Also - red cherry ( I don't like it here).
Long finish with spice and cinnamon.
Phew... very demanding wine if so, I can describe it.
Who said that Margeaux wines are feminine wines!?

  • Light with earthy blackberry; elegant; soft lean finish.

  • 13% alcohol. Pretty good dense cork with no wine penetration. Decanted 75mn ahead. Deep colour with some fading and the onset of bricking at the rim.
Very good mature nose, largely tertiary (leather, a hint of tobacco) but not without fruit (of the dark variety, but with nothing cooked). The mouth is slightly less harmonious on account of a fair amount of acidity, but on the other hand this is what makes the wine so vivid. So unlike the stereotype of the vintage! There is good grip.
No rush to drink this wine, and indeed it could evolve into something even better in five year's time or so. Very satisfying now however.
A success, and thanks are due to the generous donor.
