  • NV Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 89 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (7/24/2012)

Tasted at the Domaine. 2007 base. This cuvee is made like vintage with a blend of 4 villages (Le Mesnil, Oger, Avize, Cramant) and each is vinified separately then blended. Really lovely nose with lots of white fruit, spice and autolytic character. Good acidity and nice minerality on the palate. Quite poised with good length. Very good. 89+

  • 2005 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Speciale Blanc de Blancs Les Chetillons 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (7/24/2012)

Tasted at Pierre Peters. Lovely nose with autolytic characters and really pleasant orchard fruit and green apple. This was more open than the 2004 with a rich mouthfeel and loads of minerality and lively acidity. Drinks well now but give this 5-7+ years and it should be stunning. Loads of potential. Excellent. 91+

  • 2004 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Speciale Blanc de Blancs Les Chetillons 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (7/24/2012)

Tasted at Pierre Peters. Similar nose to the 2005 but this was tighter and had more nutty and bright citrus aromas on the nose. On the palate this offered more refinement and complexity than the 2005 with a long finish and excellent acidity. Like the 2005, this will need plenty of time to show its full potential which could hit the mid-90s. Excellent. 92+

  • 2002 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Speciale Blanc de Blancs Les Chetillons 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (7/24/2012)

Tasted at Pierre Peters. This was the shyest of this trio of Chetillons and took 20mins in the glass before giving up much. When it finally did it offered beautiful autolytic character with nuts, citrus and orchard fruits with a touch of honey. Rich mouthfeel with a chalky and mineral laden finish. It will be fun to compare this with the 2004 in 10 years. Needs 5-7+ years. Excellent. 91+

Flight 2 - Dinner at Le Vieux Puits (1 Note)

  • NV Launois Pere et Fils Champagne Grand Cru Veuve Clemence Brut Blanc de Blancs 89 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (7/24/2012)

Drank at Le Vieux Puits in Ay. Very young and crisp with an airy nose of floral and citrus fruits. On the palate it’s linear and precise with solid acidity and freshness. After being open for an hour or so hints of dough on the palate. Overall very young and all about pure fruit and minerality right now. Should be excellent in 3-5 years. Very good. 89+

Flight 3 - Ruinart (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    (7/25/2012)

Tasted at Ruinart. Tight on the nose with light citrus, floral and hints of apple. Fine mousse with great acidity. Crisp and linear on the palate with a long citrus and mineral finish. A well-structured and precise Champagne that is drinking fairly well right now but won’t reveal it’s true potential for at least 5-7+ years, at which point, should be outstanding. Excellent. 92+

  • 1998 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Brut Rosé 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    (7/25/2012)

Tasted at Ruinart. Copper/orange colour. Lemon and orange zest nose with berry, strawberry and smoky notes as well. Again precise on the palate with tart fruits and loads of acidity. Powerful and energetic. Very youthful. Can be enjoyed now but it would almost be a shame to not let this age at least another 5 years. Should be great in time. Excellent. 91+

Flight 4 - Krug (3 Notes)

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée 90 Points

    France, Champagne

    (7/25/2012)

Tasted at Krug. No formal notes. Classic young Grande Cuvee with earthy, yeasty and apple aromas. Richer moutheel with good acidity and a lengthy finish. I find this cuvee typically needs 5+ years before it will show its greatness. Grand Cuvee is typically a blend of 120-190 different wines. Excellent. 90+

  • 2000 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    (7/25/2012)

Tasted at Krug. 210010 ID code. Smells fresher and younger than the 1998 with floral and brighter apple and citrus notes. On the palate this is fresh and airy with a fine mousse yet also rich and complex at the same time. Great acidity and a long citrusy finish. Easier drinking than the 1998 at this point but a touch less complex. Give this 7-10+ years and it should hit the mid-90s. Excellent. 91+

  • 1998 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    (7/25/2012)

Tasted at Krug. Slightly darker in colour than the 2000. Toasty nose with bready and yeasty aromas too with apple, citrus and nutty notes as well. As this developed in the glass it seemed to gain complexity and energy all while maintaining a creamy and rich mouthfeel. A bit tighter and less showy than the 2000. Like the 2000, give this a decade and it should be great. Excellent. 92+
