Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • NV Jacques Selosse Initial 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Disgorged October 21, 2009. No formal notes. Toasty, nutty and great acidity. Not as brilliant as previous bottles but still first-rate. Excellent.

  • 2000 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Nutty aromas and a good deal of oaky notes with underlying and fading riper citrus fruit. I thought this might be slightly advance (even for a 13 year old Chablis as another bottle of this I had two years was extremely youthful and fresh). Richer mouthfeel then seemed to gain in precision as the night went on. A really nice wine despite its advanced stage but based on this bottle, time to drink up. Excellent.

  • 2007 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Morey St. Denis 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

Nice Asian spice with sweet dark pinot fruit, earth and hints of floral. Richer and fairly weighty in the mouth with dark cherry flavours and a nice really spicy finish. Solid acid here with fine tannins. Showing very well already but there’s more to come. Very good. 89+

  • 2007 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Some leafiness on the nose along with some barnyard/funk, raspberry fruit and this multivitamin note. Lighter in body than the Meo with brighter and redder fruits. 2007 in Gevrey has been quite variable and often left me disappointed and this wine is no different. Maybe it’s just the stage that it is at right now but others seemed to like this more than I did. Good.

  • 1995 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Now we’re talking! Pure and rustic Northern Rhone syrah notes of black olive tapenade, meat, dark red fruits and pepper. Rustic and gravelly on the palate with classic flavours, firm structure and great acidity. Drinking very well right now but this will have a long plateau of great drinking. This is what I love about Clape. Outstanding.

  • 2001 Château d'Issan 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Floral, cassis and graphite nose showing great Margaux typicity. Finer tannins and nice acidity round out the dark cherry and cassis dominant palate. As it opened in glass notes of penceil shavings and cedar also emerged from the glass. This is a really nice wine that’s just entering its drinking window. Excellent. 90+

  • 2007 Antonin Guyon Corton-Bressandes 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Some savory notes with darker red fruits and a slightly rustic profile yet with powdery and approachable tannins. This was surprisingly easy drinking for a 2001 Corton. Big and youthful but approachable. I think this would be better in 5-7 years when it’s developed some secondary notes. Very good. 89+

  • 1995 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Santo Stefano 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Beautiful nose of tar, dried flowers and redcurrants. Quite tight on the palate with firm tannins and excellent acidity. This is still young and needs 5-7 more years in the cellar. A good bit of potential here. Excellent. 90+

  • 2001 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

This was tight and unyielding. Structure dominating the palate with mouth puckering tannins and load of acid. Had an unpleasant vitamin/plastic note on the nose. This is not in a good place right now. Try again in 2021. Judgement reserved.
