Introduction

This was an impromptu gathering of 10 of us looking for an excuse to crack "a few" bottles.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • NV Vinum Cellars Chenin Blanc Sparkling 86 Points

    USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi

I didn't take any detailed notes on this. It was pleasant enough and very drinkable. A bit of residual sugar, nice fruit, peach.

  • 2002 Philippe Prié Champagne Tradition Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. 80% PN & 20%Chard. The nose is fresh and bright with fresh dough, distinct apple, hints of quince, yeast and mineral. The palate is light and precise with apple pie flavors followed by citrus and light yeast on the finish. Well balanced and quite clean with nice minerality. I found this to be lighter bodied and a bit more elegant than the 1999 Cuvee Love Flowers. Outstanding! Group #3 WOTN. 91+pts

  • 1999 Philippe Prié Champagne Cuvée Love Flowers Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color, slightly darker than the 2002 Brut Traditions. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. 50-50 blend of Chard and PN. Minerals, more yeast, apple, pear, . The palate is fuller bodied with nutty undertones, honey, apple, pear, minerals, a bit chalky on the finish. While both had similar noses, this showed more power and complexity than the 2002 Brut. It actually seemed to take on more elegance on day two while finishing off the last sips.

  • 2003 Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Brut 93 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was really nice, and no surprise since this is always one of the best domestic sparklers. The nose shows citrus, yeast, mineral, orchard fruit. The palate also has nice yeast, bright and clean, citrus, lemon, pear, good cut, long finish. This was my and group #2 WOTN.

  • 2002 Dr. Heidemanns-Bergweiler Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Stunningly dark gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. This was quite remarkable, as beautiful to look at as is was to smell and drink. Showing more as a beerenauslese that a spatlese. The nose was effusive, full of apricots, subtle fusil, honey, and pear. The palate has lively acids, bright apricots followed by citrus, orange peel, medium body and nicely layered fruit. Very elegant and a very long finish. This was most impressive and was my and group WOTN 8 of 9 first place votes.
