Introduction

After a long day of trade tastings we finally had the opportunity to enjoy some wine.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2000 Frédéric Magnien Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Grands Murs 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Very dense and solidly built for such a tough vintage, open knit, riper fruit; well stored and showing well today. 1st experience with this vineyard.

  • 2006 Delas Frères Crozes-Hermitage Le Clos 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

Dark core with reddish rim; intense nose of fruit, animal, beef blood, and pepper; soft tannins, ripe yet great acidity to keep this balanced for another 10 years; I liked that there was no tapenade which can be overpowering in Crozes; interesting and really good N. Rhone especially Crozes.

  • 2006 Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Perrière 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Drinking beautifully, soft silky, and elegant, a mix of red but leaning more toward the darker side, balanced, good now but should age well.

  • 1999 Giuseppe Quintarelli Cà del Merlo Veneto IGT 90 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT

Really solid and showing well, kind of sweet and out of place amongst the Burgs even though I wanted to see how this stood up against them, very ripe, no VA, leather, red fruit, almost too weight in the midpalate leads me to think that this needs 10 more years, this will definitely deserve a higher score with some more time.

  • 2006 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche / La Péroline 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

The darker, brooding, rustic side of Cote Rotie, though not my preferred style you can't help but appreciate the wine, still pent up in potential this has lots of pepper, brambly dark fruit, smoke, some black olive and a large wrap of tannin from what seems to be whole cluster fruit, old school, must be Cote Brune, I was on Cornas.

  • 2007 Domaine Du Terme Gigondas Black Label 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Wow, really surprised this was Gigondas as I swore this was classic CdP from a powerful, traditional producer. Lots of pent up power, still tannic, ripe but not overripe, clearly Grenache, dark and brooding; would like to see this in 5-8 years though it has a lot more gas in the tank.

  • 2005 Luciano Sandrone Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Nebbiolo d'Alba

Classically colored showing some age; nose is also classic Nebbiolo showing lots of class and balance with sandalwood, cherry, and dried roses; still good life and will drink this well for at least 5 more years if well stored.

  • 2006 Jean-Jacques Confuron Clos Vougeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

A special treat; crimson red color; to me it was very classic seeming like an NSG but on a much more noble level; hard sour cherry, fine grained tannin, great acid and balance especially for '06, still a little primary so drink now and enjoy or enjoy more in 2020. 93+

  • 2007 Château Montus Madiran 88 Points

    France, Southwest France, Madiran

Dark and brooding, black in color, tobacco, dark fruit, strong tannin though drinkable enough due to the '07 vintage.

  • 2005 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Quet

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark and intense; dark fruit, ashy, extremely tannic and seemingly in a dumb phase; not rated. I know '05 was a powerful vintage and are nowhere near peak, but this was just a mean bottle.

Closing

All were very expressive, true to where they are from and the person behind them, and also very young even though they had some age.
