Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1995 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Dark core with garnet rim; Bordeaux nose, sweet cedar, tobacco, sandy, really expressive; menthol, red currant, cassis, ripeness; still youthful as I got a sense this was still pent up and a touch sweet; would have gone to Bordeaux if the alcohol wasn't a tick high; probably deserving of a higher score.

  • 2000 Château Clerc Milon 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark red core with 1/4 inch bricking; rusty, iron, clay, red currant, weedy, cedar; hard and slightly closed, red currant, cigar, pent up, aged but lean and tight (and austere especially after the '95 Pahlmeyer), earth, drying tannin on finish; good but failed to really impress as Clerc normally does.

  • 2005 Château Belair 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Dark garnet core with light red rim; red and dark almost candied fruit, youthful, vanilla, milk chocolate, some weediness; riper texture, licorice, anise, wet earth, vanilla, darker chocolate, long finish, good tannic wrap, good mid-palate; very tasty and definite potential, 91+.

  • 2004 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Cloudy crimson with color change; exceptional nose of graham cracker, tart red fruit, cranberry, sour cherry, a bit of stank, sweet and pure, Burgundian, almost figgy; palate is real zippy, blood orange, raspberry, sweet but dry, nice bitterness, latent tannin, finished with a bloody/iron note; this bottle was really youthful and performed well above its pay grade; insanely good example that I'm positive I will never be able to replicate.

  • 2002 Saint Cosme Côte-Rôtie 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Cloudy dense garnet core with orange crimson rim; rustic almost Burg nose, cigarette ash, red fruit, menthol, orange and cherry, stank; rustic on the palate, nutty, orange, cherry, slight tannin on finish; after realizing this was Cote Rotie the classic Syrah came out- plum, purple fruit, apple skin, and olive; very good for a tough vintage.

  • 1986 Château Rieussec 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

From 750 mL; golden color with green hues, very youthful appearance; spicy pineapple, orange marmalade, apricot, white raisin; weighty, waxy, still fresh and new, still primary, good botrytis; beautiful wine with lots of potential yet.

Closing

An incredible evening of French (or French styled) wines. Good diversity and age ranges. Not a dog in the bunch.
The Les Cailloux was brilliant as WOTN with the Rieussec #2, and the Pahlmeyer #3.
