Georges Noellat Tasting (pre-2010)

Introduction

I believe the Domaine has offload a large chunk of their pre-2010 stock as the new winemaker Maxime Cheurlin has taken over the winemaking since 2010 (and this particular retailer has bought a large set of the old stock). From what I understand, the new vintages (post 2009) have taken on a new level of greatness. Unfortunately I have yet to try them. But judging from this tasting, I believe the terroir and vines are top-notch and this Domaine can only grow from strength to strength. Problem is can you still find them at a good price given the few short vintages of late?

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 1990 Georges Noellat Nuits St. Georges 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

Bricking, secondary aromas and flavor profile. This is slightly over the hill now, probably due to lack of acidity.

  • 2009 Georges Noellat Nuits St. Georges 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

Clear ruby. Definitely still very young. Pure and not overripe as some 09s can be. Not a terribly distinctive wine as this could be in a shut down phase now. Technically-wise you can find no faults here. I like that this was elegant and did not have overt oak influence. I'm quite impressed with this villages.

  • 2003 Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanée 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Bricking rims, quite advanced color. As expected this was very ripe on the nose, with cognac-like aromas. Sweet on the palate and quite a fair bit of secondary flavors. Not terroir-transparent but drinking very well now actually. Quite enjoyable despite the atypicity.

  • 1989 Georges Noellat Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Deep complex nose of predominantly red fruits. Secondary on the palate with a rather sour finish. Cognac-like was what came to mind. Drink up as this lacks much energy and stuffing now.

  • 2001 Georges Noellat Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Vibrant, mouth-filling wine with aromas of dark fruits. Doesn't have the lush velvet tannins of Vosne but with a slightly rustic and robust tannin profile. Yet the spice and animale profile makes it Vosne like. Very drinkable with good body and intensity. I like this.

  • 1996 Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Light bricking on the rims. Nose already secondary, with dried fruits and mushroom rather than spice. Hint of sweetness on the flavor profile with good intensity and body. Not as thin and acidic as some 96s can be. Good decent finish. Palate was better than the nose. A worthy effort.

  • 2008 Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Classic Vosne nose of herb and spice. Very transparent color as well as on the palate, to the point of being slightly lean and acidic. Sour red cherries on the palate. I'm concerned this does not have the stuffing to make old bones. Slightly disappointing for a Beaux Monts.

  • 2008 Georges Noellat Echezeaux 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

This could be a tad shut down as on the nose you can get hints of spices but palate-wise was rather simple and not as structured at the moment. Very pure, no oak influence with a citrusy acidity. I think this needs time.

  • 1989 Georges Noellat Grands-Echezeaux 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Cloudy. A little drying on the finish. Sweet and ripe medium-bodied wine. I'm surprised this wasn't as vibrant as it should be. Perhaps off bottle? Drink now.

  • 2004 Georges Noellat Grands-Echezeaux 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

On the nose this was slightly green as per the vintage but not terribly distracting. It's on the palate that you taste the greatness of the terroir. Granted this was not terribly transparent but there was good amount of depth in the intense and palate staining profile right up to the finish. Bravo!
