Flight 1 (4 Notes)

Introductory blind tasting with small group of friends to learn about different red wine varietals and regions of France. Each wine was popped and poured side-by-side into individual Spiegelau Authentis tasting glass.

  • 2010 Château Peyrabon 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Dark purple and opaque colour. Instant nose of wood and liquorice with dark fruit, blackberries, and dirt. On the palate is a very bold wine with mouth gripping tannins and a long dry finish. Blind tasting narrowed it down to Bordeaux region, Cabernet based. My least favourite of the night, groups last pick as well. Drank leftovers the next day, still very tight proving this should be held for at least 5 more years before it reaches its prime.

  • 2011 Pierre Amadieu Vacqueyras La Grangeliére 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras

Light translucent ruby colour with slight purple ting around the edges. Aroma of sweet red fruit, strawberries, and lavender. On the palate is a fruity and medium bodied wine with a lingering sweetness. Simple wine with a hot finish. At its best now but will hold for a few more years. Blind tasting guess of Rhone valley, grenache based wine. My third choice of the night, groups second favourite.

  • 2009 Château Pindefleurs 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Dark opaque ruby colour with slight orange tinge on the rim (confirmed my blind guess of merlot based, right bank bordeaux). Complex nose that kept evolving over the night; leather, coffee, chocolate, and what seems to be the smell of cured meat. On the palate a very interesting wine medium-bold body and earthy texture with tannins that are integrated nicely. My second choice for the night, groups third choice.

  • 2010 Maison Roche de Bellene Savigny-lès-Beaune Vieilles Vignes 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

Wow this wine is easy to drink! Upon pouring the light transparent pale colour gave it away during our blind tasting to be pinot noir, burgundy. Aroma of red fruit and was dominated of the smell of my homemade strawberry jam. Palate was slightly sweet and elegant body. This wine is amazing right now and great to drink on its own. Both mine and the group's favourite of the night.
