1981 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia Flawed

Hugely advanced colour. Deep copper. Marmalade on the nose. Good attack, very drinkable but a shadow of what it should be. It's lost all it's mid-palate complexity and texture. If you didn't know the wine you'd probably be happy enough, but not what it should be. Mid (**)* at best.

1970 Bodegas Franco-Españolas Rioja Cosecha Especial Bordón 93 Points

Slightly cloudy, mid to light garnet. Lovely sweet-fruited trad Rioja nose of orange peel, spice and Christmas fireside. A little thin and slightly astringent through the mid-palate initially, but this soon fills out nicely. Quietly persistent if not especially long. Lovely. ****

Pale, faded garnet. A little spicier than the Bordon, with higher acidity. Good red berry fruit. Long. A lot meatier when the dregs are poured. Showing well, but drink up time. ***1/2

Nicely mocha-coffee scented nose. A touch of orange, but altogether fresher and denser and more vigorous. Dense and rich and lovely. ****1/2

A little cloudy. Rally lovely slightly burnt caramel nose. Very rich and almost sweet - nose very similar to the cream. Some richness, but dry, slightly hot and a little spirity on the palate. Quite impressive, but for me the nose wins out. PC aficionados will be more enthusiastic. It is impressive though. ****

Slightly more mute / restrained on the nose cf the 39. A little fresher and more saline. Retains it's freshness and salinity cf the 39. A lovely wine, but on the day, the 39 has that little bit extra. ****
