Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2012 Marcel Lapierre Morgon 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

    Tasted blind. Pop and poured.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of mint, herb ?rhubarb, and a touch of florality.
On the palate, high acidity, light tannins, medium body, medium finish. Flavours of raspberries, strawberries, licorice/candy, stony minerality, and mild spice. A bit straightforward and lacking in complexity/depth, but mouth-feel is fresh and enjoyable.
I guessed a Rhone Grenache. On hindsight, the high acidity (Grenache typically lower acidity) and the nice mouth-feel (from the carbonic maceration) should have given me a better clue that this was a Gamay from Beaujolais.

  • 2010 Descendientes de José Palacios Bierzo Pétalos 90 Points

    Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo

    Tasted blind. Pop and poured.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, dark purple colour.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of peppery spice, flowers, and a bit of cassis.
On the palate, high acidity, medium silky tannins, full body, long finish. Flavours of blueberries, blackberries, black pepper, minty herb, and some cassis.
I guessed a Northern Rhone Syrah. Quite nice. My first time trying Mencia.

  • 2007 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Poured into decanter and left to air for about an hour before drinking.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, dark ruby colour.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of vanilla oak, chocolate, and sweet dark cherries.
On the palate, high acidity, big and firm but very approachable tannins, full body, long finish. Flavours of chocolate, vanilla, blackberries, dark cherries, and some tar notes. Excellent mouth-feel and lots of stuff going on. Very well integrated. Already approachable at this young stage.
Modern style Barolo that might upset some purists/traditionalists.

  • 2008 Bodega El Esteco Ciclos Malbec Merlot 89 Points

    Argentina, Valles Calchaquíes, Salta, Cafayate

Tasted blind. Slow-oxed in bottle for about 2 hours before drinking.
Appearance is clear, deep opaque intensity, inky dark purple colour.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of chalky earth, loads of deep dark fruits, and also a lot of oak influence.
On the palate, medium acidity, high tannins that are somewhat soft/plush, full body, long finish. Flavours of heavy oak, vanilla, blueberries, blackberries, tobacco, cassis. A very slight greenish note appeared with more air.
I guessed a Napa Valley Meritage blend. Surprised to find out this was a Malbec-Merlot blend from Argentina. Michel Torino is a master, and his Malbec wines are such a great value at the price point.
    50% Malbec, 50% Merlot.
