Introduction

We came.
We enjoyed.
We emptied all the btls.
We went home to watch football.

Flight 1 - Entrée (1 Note)

No, I still don't get it with rosé, other than as a quencher.

  • 2012 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 81 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

    Plain Jane.
    Indifferent wine.
    No personality.
Good taste, like Coca Cola has a good taste. Nothing exciting, nothing interesting, just a plain rosé. The finish holds a small bitterness that will go well with most foods.

The bitterness gives the extra point that distinguishes this wine from the "good" wines of 80 points.

Flight 2 - Real red bbq wines, part 1 (4 Notes)

The Montus was amazing and blew many of us away.
Beaucastel was unexpectedly smooth and easy-drinking, lacking oomph and interesting traits.

  • 2010 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape A la Gloire de mon Grand-Père 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Dark purple.
Beautifully perfumed with hints of herbs and bergamot (!).
A distinctly tannic, red-berried and pointed SPEAR that somehow manages to lack sharpness, weight and roundness. Thus: in a thin state, in a way that it shouldn't be drunk.

Insanely young wine, should be allowed to rest for 10 more years. Will definitely become greater.

  • 2005 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Not sure this wine was completely on par. Started out with a foul "corked" stench that thankfully blew off after some hours of dbl decanting. No problems with the taste.

Red with some signs of maturity.
Nose of loamy parsnip with deep notes.
On the palate it is apparent it spent some time on barrels, displaying a round, warm-vintage character that is still elegant, even if acids and tannins ar both M.

Compared to prior experiences, this is either a rather odd bird or this btl (1st of 5) just under-performed. No apparent fault.
Four to go, next one ~2018.

  • 2009 Château Montus Madiran 94 Points

    France, Southwest France, Madiran

Shockingly good, and all people attending were flabbergasted of this comparatively humble wine's amazing performance.

Blackish red with a violet tinge.
Nose took a long time to even wake up. Awake, it displays lingonberries and molten butter (jag saknar bara palt och Biggan: gnocchi) in an awesome way. Attractive and compelling.
On the palate, it was immediately strong and rich. Superbly intense and layered. M+++ tannin M+ acid. Peerless richness.
Intense, balanced and mega-young with a great future.

I repeat myself: Of all the Montus plain wines, this is the best young one I ever tasted. And at a price like this... QPR of the decade!

Many btls to go, next one (hopefully) after 2020.

  • 2007 Château Cantemerle 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Spot on typical Great nose, but 2007 wateriness.

    Blackish red with some maturity.
Nose that is so typically Bdx that all around the table immediately referred to it as not "#3", but "the Bdx".
Palate is suffering from the 2007 watery disease. Has a fine Brett and Bdx-earth palate.
A perfect "learn the typical Bdx wine" but not great and amazing pleasure.

Flight 3 - Real red bbq wines, part 2 (3 Notes)

The Portugese wine underperformed. The Amon-Ra over-performed. WHAT A GREAT WINE!!!

  • 2004 Vinhas da Ciderma Douro Reserva 90 Points

    Portugal, Douro

After the great wines so far this evening, this one shone as rather uninteresting. Some Brett, great structure, harsh acids and good length.
    Comes from a warm place.
Unnecessarily expensive wine at ~€30 per btl.

  • 2005 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley 97 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    WOTN.
    Fantastic performance tonight!
Mjuffingly fantastic! Previous TN stands, just turn up the volume a bit! Please...
If you have a higher degree of self discipline, than, please, keep it for at least 5 years. Longer is better.

  • 2008 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Rich, juicy, alcoholic, high-strung, turbo-concentrated Shiraz with a superbly earthy minerality and a long-dong dingalong finish.
    For keeping.
    This will turn out GREAT!
(meaning, it will turn out even greater than today's performance.)
Next btl (of two) in ~2019.

Flight 4 - Dessert (2 Notes)

Hjortron berries, hjortron berry jam and vanilla ice-cream. Fingerlicking good!

  • NV Yalumba Muscat Museum Reserve Barossa Valley

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    My personal taste: 87 points.
    My objective POV: 93 points.

Very sweet but acids not matching up.
Has that incredibly typical black tea + tobacco + fruitiness of the Muscat grape. The complex and layered aromas also include åkerbärssylt (jam of Rubus arctica). A super rich, PHAT wine that just doesn't have The Sh*t. Unfortunately.
Will work better as a sauce for dessert than as a wine.
I prefer the Portugese versions at a better price.

  • 1983 Kereskedőház Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 92 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

Just like a modern St Stephan's Crown with only the slightest hint of maturity. Like as if a time-machine was used for this wine. Bought in Hungary (by Zorg) many years ago.

Well balanced, intense and well made. Still young and lacking the depth of the truly great ones.

Always fantastic to enjoy these golden miracles of yore.
