I just don't care for these wines that have a little extra fermentation in the bottle and become fizzy. Otherwise, simple and truthful - fresh, granny smith apples.
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
The oh so trendy trousseau variety - like a hipster beard in the winemaking world - full of subversive energy, signifying nothing. But, who am I to judge? I gave it a shot and it spoke to me. The aromatics are both charming and intellectually stimulating - quite complex nose, good freshness, feels balanced.
Uncomplicated raspberry on the nose, heavy body, bone dry but fizzy. Interestingly enough the more unexperienced of the two otherwise very friendly guys pouring at the tasting room in the Barlow tried to sell this to me as something very complex and interesting (the carbon dioxide that is)...
Raspberry-licorice on the nose, both red and dark berries, no oak, some sweetness from the fruit. a rather big wine (I suspect contrary to the intentions of the winemaker) in spite of the 0 % oak regime.
Purple with hints of blue. Sloeberries and black currants on the nose. Super dry, even austere on the finish. Medium body and length, elegant and with a lot of acidity. Would be very fine with food and after a year or two lying down, I guess.
Gorgeous nose! complex, berry driven but with notes along the lines of smoke, game meat, garrigue, licorice root, soft attack but very intense and held together, good freshness, long and narrow. only 11,4 % alcohol.
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
This was the only wine in the line-up that had a bit of oak on the nose, still, it is very open and charming with notes of dark chocolate, berries, garrigue, very good grip, somehow a lot bigger frame than all the other wind gap wines I tried. dry, good freshness.
My first thought was that this is a chablis 1er cru. Perhaps the fruit was just a tad bit on the ripe side of things with sunny fruit expression, but mostly this was dominated by a minerally, seashell quality and on the palate this was dry, lean, elegant. only neutral (used) oak.
