Introduction

Wines purchased from La Cabaña de Saura, El Algar, Murcia. Raul always directs me towards some gems I haven't come across before.

Flight 1 - Whites (7 Notes)

Flight 2 - Reds (15 Notes)

  • 2011 Alvaro Palacios Priorat Camins del Priorat 90 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

    (7/7/2014)

Chewy wine, with a bold black treacle, cocoa, violet and black berry fruit nose, hinting at dandelion and burdock. Attractive.

Showed very well on Day 2. More open quite meaty.

  • 2012 Bodegas Ateca Calatayud Atteca Old Vines 88 Points

    Spain, Aragón, Calatayud

    (7/9/2014)

A bit reminiscent of a new wave Rioja. There's a whiff of violets and mixed berry fruit, but the nose is a little dumb. On the palate, very sweet, quite heavy on its feet, some lean acidity not wholly integrated. But a very pleasant barbecue wine.

  • 2010 La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Rioja Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida 90 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

    (7/9/2014)

A bit bretty at first, but that blew off to reveal a sleek, elegant, classy Rioja in the modern style. Silky black stone fruit, a dash of violets. Unforced. 13.5%. VGV.

  • 2009 Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero Crianza 91 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

    (7/8/2014)

Violets and dark stone fruit suggests Tempranillo in one of its guises. Undertone of tinned tomatoes leads us to Ribeiro del Duero. Palm butter and coconut are hallmarks to me of Condado de Haza. Some signs of age on the visuals. Nice wine and VVG QPR.

  • 2009 Abadia Retuerta Selección Especial Sardon de Duero 92 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León

    (7/16/2014)

Immediately attractive, forward but classy wine. Plums and mulberries on the nose, sweet but with only a hint of jamminess, a bit of spice, vanilla, and an underpinning of black treacle. Some sweetness on the palate, but structured and with well integrated acidity. Nice wine and drinking very well now. 14%.

  • 2012 Teso La Monja Toro Almirez 91 Points

    Spain, Castilla y León, Toro

    (7/13/2014)

Thick, dark, classy wine from Tinta (sic) de Toro grown in 3 separate sites, with powerful black treacle aromatics, liquorice powder, dandelion and burdock, and Priorat-like minerality. Not at all jammy, as you might expect from such a big wine. And 'only' 14.5% ABV. GV.

  • 2009 Casa Gran del Siurana Priorat Cruor 92 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

    (7/10/2014)

Ripe cassis notes on the nose of this very more-ish blend of Garnatxa, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Caranyena, with the ripe bramble influence of the Grenache rounding things out. Wears its 15.5% ABV very lightly. GV.

  • 2009 Finca de la Rica Rioja El Nómada de la Rica 82 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

    (7/12/2014)

Jammy bramble fruit on the rather one-dimensional nose. Pretty dried out on the palate. I felt this was rather forced, perhaps over-extracted. 14% ABV.

  • 2009 Bodegas Reyes Ribera del Duero Teofilo Reyes 85 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

    (7/15/2014)

A straight down the line Ribeiro del Duero. Violets, brambly fruit and tinned tomatoes on the nose. A bit disjointed on the palate, with some unintegrated acidity. A bit dried out. One dimensional, but pleasant enough. 13.5%.

  • 2011 Psi Ribera del Duero 87 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

    (7/14/2014)

Attractive nose of violets, brambles and a touch of cassis, but rather cardboardy on the palate, dried out, lacking vitality. Nice enough, but disappointing for the price. 14%.

  • 2010 Crápula Jumilla Cr Gold 5 87 Points

    Spain, Murcia, Jumilla

    (7/17/2014)

Perhaps not destined for the export market, this 100% Monastrell delivers plenty of ripe, jammy fruit but has yet to rid itself of a certain youthful disjointedness. 14%.

  • 2010 Mas Martinet Priorat Martinet Bru 92 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

    (7/18/2014)

A blend of Garnatxa and Syrah, this is a very big wine indeed, with lots of ripe jammy fruit that, at least to begin with, somewhat masked its origin. But some trademark Priorat minerality emerged with time. A bold but classy wine, and very more-ish. 15%.

  • 2011 Bodegas Atalaya Almansa La Atalaya

    Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Almansa

    (7/18/2014)

I think this had some TCA but it was such a big, big, massively proportioned, powerfully flavored wine that it was hard to be sure whether I was tasting cork taint or just some rather unattractive twigginess. There was certainly still a lot of ripe berry fruit, eucalyptus and vanilla. At 16%, not a shy wine. I would like to try another bottle before passing judgment.

  • 2005 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea 91 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    (7/19/2014)

A blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% a mix of Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, this straddled traditional and modern stylistically. The silky mouthfeel and glossy sheen to the fruit nodded towards the modern, but the leathery, animal nose - married with violets and plums- was defiantly old school. Relatively high acidity. Vary classy wine with a long future ahead. 13.5%.

  • 2008 Casa Castillo Jumilla Pie Franco 92 Points

    Spain, Murcia, Jumilla

    (7/20/2014)

Dry, dense, austere, almost forbidding wine - but very impressive for its sinewy build. Lavender, thyme and violets add complexity to the monolithic dark fruit.
