Introduction

Two old farts trying to be on a diet go out drinking some odd btls of wine to Mr Tani's food. A magnificent evening unfolded!
The food at Tani deserves a Michelin star. Looks a little rustic but taste is always sensitive, balanced, pure and interesting. He is well versed in the art of kontrapunkt. There are always surprises and there are always old friends on his menu that is composed on a daily basis.

Flight 1 - Food and wine (3 Notes)

The high if the evening was fois gras and 2001 Suduiraut...
Unbeatable!

  • 2011 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane 86 Points

I'm not a huge fan of Viognier. Rich and concentrated in the same way as a better Beaujolais would be. Acids prevalent but in the lower domains. Has a waxy mouthfeel. Restrained aromatics and some umpa-umpa, but still doesn't do it for me. A rather pricey *meh* as I knew what was in the glass but expected a whole lot more...

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

My second 100 point wine on CT so far. A brilliant wine that we could not find a single imperfection in. Two guys greedily finished a full btl with only two dishes: foie gras and cheese plate.

Becoming golden, but still not quite there.
Nose is so rich and attractive that my language doesn't cover the necessary ground. Grande! This is as good as a Sauternes nose gets. Like a fairy tale. Beautiful, sunny weather. Happiness... Botrytis, honey, white peach, dried apricots, a wide variety of flowers, wax etc and just completely unbelievably beautiful. The kind of outstanding poetry that moves you to tears.
In the mouth: the rich and perfectly balanced components hit me first. Acids, sugars and fruit. The wine never ends. The smallest sips burst in to fireworks displays of grande proportions.

This wine will continue to evolve over many years. 3 btls to go, next one in ~2025.
    At amazing Restaurant Tani (Tokyo).

A massive wine with all the elegance in the World. Almost no sediment. Our btl showed a lot of behind of cow, just the way I like it.

Dark red with purple tinge, looking young.
Nose of cow's arse, cherries, red berries, meat, la garrigue with something wild and muscular.
On the palate, this is fabulously restrained with the aromas from the nose reflected well. Superb balance created by the M+ tannins, M+ acids, ample yet restrained fruit and the magnificent duck.

Two old geezers emptied this btl in what seemed like two gulps...

Wife joined in later and had no problems with the Grenache here.

    At fabulous Restaurant Tani (Tokyo).

Closing

After the cheese plate, we indulged in a few glasses of Drappier's Marc de Champagne that delivered well and a glass of the insanely expensive and plain Jane 1952 Vieil Armagnac by Gelas et Fils.

2001 Suduiraut almost moved us to tears with its gracefulness.
