Introduction

A dinner to celebrate the summer having arrived and to consume various Christmas/Birthday presents exchanged over the previous couple of years...

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2011 Domaine Bertrand Bachelet Chassagne-Montrachet 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

Opened 30 minutes prior to drinking.

We started with this wine and it was a very decent white, albeit without being at risk of hitting any form of greatness. Still very young and closed and was far more approachable the following evening. Light gold in colour, racing acidity, with citrus on the nose. Medium length.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 1990 Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Decanted for several hours prior to dinner and then consumed with the cheese starter.

    What. A. Wonderful. Wine.

This wine looks its age, with a distinct, tawny rim around a darker medium crimson core. The nose danced out of the glasses with red fruits and spices. Completely integrated oak and tannins - a lighter style red that was wonderful, with a long length that completely belied the lighter-style of the wine.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Decanted for several hours prior to dinner and then consumed with the main - roast lamb.

Terrific, classicaly chateauneuf with herbs, barnyard, cherries and grilled meats on the nose. Medium body and medium length. Fully integrated tannins. Of the reds consumed this evening, the most disappointing bottle.

  • 2000 Château Figeac 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Decanted for several hours prior to dinner and then consumed with the main - roast lamb.

Very elegant, if not classical right-bank Bordeaux, but I guess you don't buy Figeac for that. Silky smooth tannins that are now nicely integrated. Medium body and medium to long length. Nose of red berries, cigars and leather. Lovely wine.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2001 Château Rieussec 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Decanted for half an hour and then served with dessert (lemon meringue pie) and then the cheese plate. Went better with cheeses!

Both the nose and palate were intense with apricots, caramel, marmalade, flowers, tropical fruits and honey soaring from the glass or bursting through the mouth respectively. This doesn't so much resemble wine as nectar, and I can still recall the finish which went on for minutes...

Massive fan of this wine. This is about as good a wine experience as you can get.
