Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1918 Château Filhot 68 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

To start, I have to say, that I did not taste this blind, so if I would have tasted this blind I might have guessed that this would have been something like a 30 year old dry white wine and I would have rated this 5-10 points better. But knowing that this is a Sauternes, you know that it just is not a good sauternes, hence the low rating.

Liquid butter, movie popcorn, slightly medicinal, quite short in the palate, chestnuts, dry

Molasses, melon, caramel, creme brulee, nice sweetness, good and perfectly aged sauternes

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1926 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Very creamy and nice texture, coffee, candied oranges, tahiti vanilla, really nice balance and intensity, good wine!

  • 1934 Château Caillou 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Almonds, forest honey, slightly medicinal, the bitterness is a tad to dominant, all in all a nice sauternes, but it's lack of harmony is preventing a higher rating

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1942 Château Rieussec 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Caramel, nice sweetness, rather on the elegant side, a bit lacking "punch" but really a fabulous wine to drink. It was unfortunately massively overpowered by the 1943 Rieussec next to it.

  • 1943 Château Rieussec 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    AMAZING!

Raisins, creme brulee, malt, slight hint of plastic, enormously dense and intense, herbal noes, vanilla and candied oranges, this baby is awesome!!

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Château d'Yquem 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

I never like this wine in the past tastings, but this time it was different. Initially, just aer a pop-and-pour I rated it 89 points and was unimpressed. It was nearly muted in the nose, quite floral with some honey notes. But then after 3 hours this baby tuned up and was showing so beautiful notes of caramel-fleur-de-sel with so much added weight and sweetness. That tells me that this one just needs to sit in the cellar for at least another 10 years.

Flight 6 (3 Notes)

  • 1964 Château Lafite Rothschild 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

As bad as this wine's reputation is, we trusted the sommelier's recommendation and went with a half bottle of this one and we were rewarded.

Red berries, graphite, some apples, very long and surprisingly elegant. Good choice!

  • 1990 Château Gruaud Larose 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Floral with an intense toast note from the oak, licorice, red bell peppers, very young with still a heap of tannin and acidity, very long!

  • 1985 Château Gruaud Larose 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Similar in the notes and taste as the 1990 with the red bell peppers and the toasted notes from the oak, but somewhat a bit harsher and less balanced.
