Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2013 Bodega Chacra Pinot Noir Barda 88 Points

    Argentina, Patagonia, Río Negro

Pale colour, could almost be a dark rosé in the Larmandier-B mould. Young and almost frizzante. Vibrant. Inconsequential summer picnic wine. **1/2. An hour later, this has settled down, darkened, put on some weight, lost the frizz and seems a bit more substantial and serious. ***

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Bodega Chacra Pinot Noir Barda 90 Points

    Argentina, Patagonia, Río Negro

Half. Fuller, darker, more serious nose. As I remember it from previous bottles. A touch of sweetness right at the end, but fresh and zingy red-fruited mid palate. Sweeter and fuller than the Haisma. ***1/2

  • 2012 Mark Haisma Pinot Noir Bourgogne 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

A little lighter and leaner. Tighter than out of halves. A touch of gas. Feels as if it's tightening up a little and maybe closing down. Quite serious. After some air this relaxed and showed a little more expansively with a gloss to it. Really good. Plenty of energy here. Bare ****

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Bodega Chacra Pinot Noir Barda 87 Points

    Argentina, Patagonia, Río Negro

A curiously fragrant nose. Very sweet and slightly plummy. Confiture. A full-on new world style without the acidity to balance it. Lacks freshness. Forgot to return to this to see what air had done for it, but on initial showing, low ***

  • 2011 Mark Haisma Pinot Noir Bourgogne 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Light, bright, vibrant. Serious but fun. In a good place at the moment. Certainly a little more expansive from the off than the 12, though ultimately that is the better wine. ***1/2

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Bodega Chacra Pinot Noir Barda 88 Points

    Argentina, Patagonia, Río Negro

Dark, red fruited. A touch of confiture on the nose. Sweet, red-fruited with some mid-palate ripeness. Fresh finish. With air it rounds out and shows sweeter than the Haisma. Better when chilled a little. ***

  • 2010 Mark Haisma Pinot Noir Bourgogne 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

An interesting, quite meaty nose. Savoury. The attack is quite sweet by contrast, reasonably expansive, and with a nice sappy finish. Fresh and quite long. ***1/2

Closing

Thoughts? Haisma very consistent. 2011 Gevrey hardly a step up from the over performing BR. Barda sweeter and fuller than Haisma, despite some 'low' alcohol vintages, but generally very vintage variable — try before buying more than a bottle. Picture a decent venue for an informal gathering, small plate tasting menu worked well, though the food was nothing one couldn't produce at home, and some of the combinations seemed less than the sum of their parts. Possibly the world's most uncomfortable chairs? Thanks to Dave for herding.
