Introduction

Matt Goldman was in town for a conference and a couple folks got together to open some bottles and welcome him to town. I was really happy that we had some snow flurries outside...always fun to see the terror on the face of SoCal residents when they experience our weather!

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 1998 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Thought this was beautiful. Lots of energy and firm orchard fruit here. I revisited this late in the evening, and there was a really nice custard/bready/brioche note that was gorgeous. I had tried this a couple months agp, and the bottle tonight seemed to be more precise and elegant. Gorgeous!

  • 2006 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

Decanted for 4 hours. A very pure and berry-driven nose. There was a touch of soft oak that was noticeable too. The palate was pure and while a bit simplistic, absolutely delicious. My hope is that with time this develops more depth/complexity, but it already has a strong "deliciousness" factor.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Mazis-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Decanted 4 hours. A bit of a bruiser at first, this took a lot of time to flesh out. By the end of dinner, the berry and earth flavors deepened and fleshed out a lot. No question there's some really nice material in there, but it's in one of those funky "valleys" of its evolution. Definitely wait on opening these for a bit - my best guess is another 3-5 years.

  • 1993 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Super pretty and elegant pinot. Aromas of florals, red cherry, and autumnal tones like leaves, spice, and earth. The palate was in a great place too - flavors seemed perfectly integrated and deep. Lots of elegant floral and berry notes made this just a treat to drink.

  • 1995 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

While still a bit firm and brash, there was a lot to like here. At first I commented, "this tastes like a wool sweater dipped in cranberry juice" as the tannins were firm and intense. As we moved into dinner (and the wine got more air) the tannins softened up a lot and we paired it with a beautiful pappardelle and truffle dish. What a combo! The wine was just magnificent with the dish as the flavors of each seemed to be amplified. The truffles popped, and the Giacosa's rose/earth/tar/berry tones seemed elegant and refined.

  • 1999 Domaine Arlaud Clos St. Denis Reserve Cuvée Unique 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

Really pretty bouquet of roses, cherries, some wet earth, and spice on the nose. The palate was in a nice spot - soft, supple, and deep. Definitely got better over the course of the night, too, and the berry and floral tones seemed to get prettier and fleshier.

  • 1999 Domaine Arlaud Bonnes Mares Cuvée Unique 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Compared to the Clos St. Denis Cuvee Unique drank alongside this, there was a bit more heft to this one. It was one of those situations where this was the more masculine of the two wine featuring more intense tones of berries, earth, and florals. Dark and deep, this is just beginning to enter into the early stages of its drinking window. Delicious stuff.

  • 1976 Schneider Niersteiner Ölberg Silvaner Beerenauslese 93 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

Served blind. I thought this was far younger than it actually was...the acidity was crackling, and the flavors were intense. Lots of apricot, exotic floral notes, some creaminess, and white cherries. Gorgeous wine that was drinking incredibly well!
