Colares and Carcavelos tasting

Introduction

Overall whites showed better than reds. Signifficant bottle variance. Producers also matter. It seems, that reds from Paulo da Silva from late 70s and 80s would be in a perfect condition now, as some of the 60s were not as good as I expected. Overall it was a very nice and educational experience.

Flight 1 - White Colares (5 Notes)

  • 2010 Casca Wines Colares Monte Cascas Branco 92 Points

    Portugal, Lisboa, Colares

Light colour. Oaky, salty nose, some light lemon, not overpowering, develops some vanilla with time, also pickle marinade. High accidity, round taste of citrus and salt, long finish. Resembles a good Burgundian Chardonnay in a way, just more salty. Very high quality irrespective of where it was grown. Excellent.

  • 2009 Quinta das Vinhas de Areia Colares MJC Branco 87 Points

    Portugal, Lisboa, Colares

Darker than 2010 Monte Cascas, golden hue, also 1% higher alcohol (12.5%). Strange nose of lollipops and hard candy - sugary but not entirely clean and precise. There was also some peculiar (in a white wine) smell of tomato leaves or pizza, some flowery notes, Sprite, also cheese and beesway. Bigger body, taste of fresh oranges, reminded me of a Viognier. Didn't get this wine. Strange and may be interesting, but there wasn't that much pleasure from drinking it.

  • 1997 Viuva José Gomes da Silva & Filhos Colares Reserva Branco 90 Points

    Portugal, Lisboa, Colares

This bottle was good and overall I agree to MDEFREITAS TN. It had a pleasant oxidative character, slightly oxidative nose of small yellow plums, a bit of butter. Enormous, piercing accidity, almost pungent on the palate, which had pitch and some fudge on the finish, but in no way sweet. If corks will not fail, this wine can live forever.

  • 1969 Viuva José Gomes da Silva & Filhos Colares Reserva Branco 93 Points

    Portugal, Lisboa, Colares

Soft, even caressing, creamy, oxidative character nose of small yellow plums (alica), a whiff of petrol, ginger, citrus, nuts, honey, finally it developped even mushroom notes! Nose was to die for.
Others said - fresh apple juice, fresh bread, some medicine note, oat flakes. Excellent if you like Vin Jaune or Jerez.

  • 1967 Antonio Bernardino Paulo da Silva Malvasia de Colares Collares Visconde de Salreu (V.S.) Flawed

    Portugal, Lisboa, Colares

Two different '67 white Colares in one evening? That's a proper tasting! This was more developped than Gomes da Silva, brownish colour with a sediment. Very oxidative and may be even oxidated on the nose. Some chemical notes of accetone, pitch, may be vinegar, some mushroomes. High not so pleasant accidity, remains of creamy botter and fudge but not enough to balance out the chemical tones.
