The color of strawberry jolly rancher candies, which is, of course, a wonderful color. Seashells, (she sells them by the sea shore), which is what this wine smells like. Throw in some wild strawberries and white cherries. Tightly wound on the palate with ripping acid (which I love), this wine is laden with minerals, jetty rocks, sea salt and limestone. I get strawberries, white cherries, white peach and a hint of tart red apple along with hints of tobacco and soil. Tart but elegant, a lot of punch and sass to this wine. Just a hint of sweet yellow onion and seaweed. Mouthwatering and very focused, could be a bit too intense for many palates, but this is rocking for me. Even better as it warms up, showing more nuanced minerality. I love drinking rose in the cold of winter.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasted over the course of a few hours after it had been open for two days. Apparently it was quite intense upon opening, not surprising because it’s still mouthpuckering with its acid and tannin. Roses, tart cherries, hints of pickling spice on the nose. Palate of red and black cherries, lots of roses and rocky soil, hints of cola. A dusty but well-structured wine that I’d love to bury for five more years.
Popped and decanted, this got better and better over the course of the evening. Nose of black cherries and blackberries, lots of violets, granite, tar, coffee and bloody steak. With air, complex meaty notes come out more and more. Still hard but accessible, although the acid is a bit low for my tastes. Dark and plummy, but the fruit takes a back seat to the meaty, brothy, savory and spicy elements, of which there are many. Still dense, but maintains some freshness. The leather, meat and mineral notes are complex and long-lasting. Plenty of structure for aging, but the tannins will long outlast the fruit.
Medium ruby color, not as dark as I was expecting. Still plenty of dark fruit on the nose, blueberries and blackberries, lots of spices (kind of like tobacco and cayenne pepper), on top of charcoal and loamy soil notes. Opens up a lot and gets more violets, cracked pepper and sweet cola notes. Obviously full and bold, but still tons of structure to the tannins, low acid (of course). The fruit tends toward the black cherry (toss in the pits) and crunchy blueberries. Notes of smoke, charcoal, sawdust, deeper notes of violets, sweet cola and sarsaparilla. After a few hours, I started getting more savory elements, like chewing tobacco and meat. On day two, much more olive tapenade (green and black and Kalamata). My last bottle, and I wish I had another one to try in three or four years.
