Introduction

This tasting was conducted non-blind with a group of 6. Wines were tasted one at a time in the order listed.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

Wines were tasted in the order listed, with the first wine being wine "A", and the last "E".

  • NV Dow Porto Fine Tawny 89 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    Drank unblinded.
For whatever reason this just seemed to hit the spot tonight.
Smooth, slightly oxidized, better than the Taylor Fine Tawny consumed last month. This has good length on the finish, but with almost no complexity.
This paired very well with a chocolate tort.

    My #2, Group's #2.

  • NV Château d'Orignac Pineau des Charentes 89 Points

    France, Cognac, Pineau des Charentes

Very interesting fortified wine, but one that I had trouble wrapping my head around. Amber in color.
As this aired it gradually showed more oxidized, nutty aromas/flavors.
Despite being 18% or 19% ABV, this was quite smooth and was not as sweet as expected. Overall a well balanced wine, this was well liked by everyone.

    My #3, Group #1.

  • 2012 Evolúció Tokaji Tokaj Late Harvest 90 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

Very interesting -- quite light in body and color (almost clear). This had a distinctive white apricot aroma, and was very smooth and ethereal. Not as sweet as expected at 11.5% ABV.
This was a "love it or meh" wine, taking 2 first place votes and 2 last place votes. The dividing line seemed to be whether you enjoyed the freshness of the light bodied wine when compared to the heavier bodied wines in the tasting, or found it watery.

    My #1, Group #3.

  • 2005 Chateau Ste. Michelle Ethos Late Harvest White Riesling 86 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

And the continued decline in my scores of this wine continues. I think it's more that I no longer have a taste for such overtly sweet wines, and not a general decline in the wine itself.
This is rich, thick, and just plain sweet.

My #5, Group #5 (Last Place)

  • NV Antinori Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Tenute Marchese 87 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico

Golden amber in color, with caramel aromas and flavors.
At times I couldn't tell if I was drinking an aged white wine or with some red wine grapes added in.
This was smooth and flavorful, but not exciting.

    My #4, Group #4.
