Introduction

The ever excellent James Handford MW presented his next chapter in the tour of Burgundy that begun almost 3 years ago.

Corton is not an area we come across a lot and was interesting albeit a bit disappointing to see full flight. Apparently a region plagued with a lot of bad producers too. Martray is class though.

Flight 1 - The whites (7 Notes)

Stay off the oak guys, it's not needed.

  • 2011 Faiveley Corton-Charlemagne 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Light gold with a green tint. Young and the oak is a bit too evident, obvious, albeit only 20% new oak is used. Soft vanilla notes. Has steely , mineral freshness to it, green apple. A touch of a bitter finish. Needs time to evolve. 89-91 for now

  • 2010 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Light yellow, gold in colour, slight greenish tint. Just a fine touch of oak and it's not really evident, well integrated oak. Round but with good acidity and thus structure. Approachable even this young and was the favourite of the whites of the tasting. Touch of green apple, mineral and with good balance. 92-93 and this is one to keep for another 10years as it will be a 95 sort of wine.

  • 2009 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Light yellow in colour. Light on the nose, not much there. Similarly on the palate, lacks intensity and albeit a pleasant wine it lacks depth especially compared to the great 2007 and 2010. Touch bitter finish and dare we say a bit disappointing. 90-91

  • 2007 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Light yellow, touch of greenish tint. Light on the nose, yet revealed nice aromatics on the way. Mineral, flinty in a way. On the palate it packs a decent punch, with good ripe fruit, and has a lot of presence. Solid wine and albeit young it is a joy to be had now. Good life ahead. 92

  • 1997 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Dark in colour and shows its age. Nutty, caramel, butterscotch notes overplayed with an oxidative side ( like a Rhone white) . Light sweet on the palate. Could definitely benefit from decanting. Has a sharp core and is on the difficult side to be enjoyed unless one likes this style of wine. A touch flat too. 87

  • 2009 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Light in colour , oaky dynamic, buttery, rich wine and has its share of bitter edges. More akin to a Meursault than anything else especially compared to the Bonneau du Martray. Lacks elegance in a way and the minerality of Corton. Oak is too much in ones face.. 89-90

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

lot less) has that fatty, buttery side we encountered in the 2009 and lacks the minerality. Probably this was heavily chaptalised wine given the vintage. Lacks character and has a few bitter edges. 88-89

Flight 2 - The Reds (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Bonneau du Martray Corton 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Young and fresh across the board, from nose to palate. A few bitter edges at this stage too. Cherry, red fruits, good expression but also a bit raw which we think and hope it's the youth. A light on the finish. 90-91

  • 2002 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Blend from many Grand Cru vineyards. Touch sweet and confectionary at times. Red fruits, light secondary . Light sweet core on palate, interesting but not really of grand Cru level. Pasteurised wine. 89 at best

  • 1996 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Bressandes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Colour shows the age. Rich and with good ripe fruit, light secondary and well matured. Olives, herbs. Good pronounced acidity and overall a very pretty solid wine. 91 maybe 92

  • 1996 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Clos du Roi 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Probably the best wine on the evening.
Darker red colour and showed nice concentration . Light olive feel, fruits show a nice darker side. Very fresh still and vibrant, full of charm. Good acidity, the fruit is healthy and definitely has quite a bit of life in it still. Very good. 93
