Introduction

Juts a nice, casual Sunday night dinner with great food, wine and friends.
Donna made a fabulous meal of roast leg of lamb (her first ever, I learned, but I couldn't tell!), xx salad with farro, feta, sundries tomatoes, a spring salad and very tasty potatoes.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A tasty wine. Lovely dark and red fruit, plums, a touch of strawberry, dried herbs, garrigue, violets and a little tar on the finish, i was surprised there were also fine tannins upon opening, but they unwound with some time. This was the most herbal and rustic wine of the night. Delicious with the grilled leg of lamb and surprisingly with the farro salad as well. The wine is definitely in the drinking window - but has some more time, too. At Donna T's house, with Doreen, Jen, Tash and Ursula

I was surprised how differently - and how much younger - this wine drank than my last bottle. There were lovely red fruit notes, but bright and sweet, rather than rustic or aged. Notes of sweet raspberry and plum, a little lavender and a touch of leather on the finish. Not as many herbs nor as rustic as our prior bottles. Delicious on its own but not as good a pairing as the Telegraph - so it is good we had this bottle second. This bottle was tasty now, but could have aged for a few years longer. Great qpr for $22 in 2006. With Donna T, Doreen Y, Jen and me in Princeton, NJ.

Heavy dark fruit and perhaps a touch of spice on the finish, but fairly closed. With Donna T, Doreen, Jen and me. This is 60% mourvedre, 30% grenache and 10% syrah. Would be better with more grenache, I think. Or maybe needs more bottle age to show well.
