Introduction

Martin very kindly gave me some slow cooked semi-smoked pork with I snaffled down with some buttered garlic and olive sourdough bread and a selection of the old semillon's I tapped at Xmas and a little glass of Riesling that had been under Argon spritz since Australia Day

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 1996 Glenguin Sémillon

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

From Coravin. On the nose medium minus intensity honey, chalky stone, slight volatile acidity, dusty aromas as well. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acidity, wet grass, muted green apple, slightly sour but in better condition now than last time I had it.

  • 1991 Château Pontac Monplaisir Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Aromas of honey, muted lemon - citrus, quite maderised and with touches of oxidation here as well over marzipan, unripe almonds and a slight medicinal quality. On the palate the wine is oxidised and maderised but with cream, honey, toast and slight cedar. Obviously it's completely out of condition and is not a reflection of how it's meant to be but I find it oddly compelling and enjoyable in it's own, corrupted way.

  • 1996 Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1 Flawed

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Weeping cork. From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of wet socks, slight meaty and musty notes over toast and honey…in the mouth the wine has high intensity searing acidity with very muted flavours of lime, honey, cream but really quite tart and finishes with some soggy dampness. Short and out of condition. Hmm. FLAW on this and the previous basis.

  • 2004 J.B. Becker Wallufer Walkenberg Riesling Spätlese trocken

    Germany, Rheingau

Under argon spritz. Aromas of ripe apple tending to tropical fruit: pineapple, slight spice, stony/slaty quality and hints of orange. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acidity but this is balance by what feels like very slight residual sugar. Spicy warming notes. Quite broad on the palate with flavours of pineapple and, rather pleasantly, orange marmalade. Just damned pleasant. Broader and riper than I last remember it.

Closing

I was shocked at how pleasant the Glenguin was after how bad it had been at Xmas - I have no idea why, I can only hazard a guess that the wine had been stood up and the cork had dried out but your guess is as good as mine. The Tyrrell's is probably just doomed. I think the sink beckons...
