Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2006 J.P. Chenet Cabernet-Syrah

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc

The bouquet is not very expressive but shows some red and dark berries and some tertiary flavors. On the palate very mild, a touch of licorice, some sweetness, low acidity and no tannin left. This is a very low budget wine and at 9 years of age it was still drinkable, which was a great surprise. No score.

In the bouquet red and dark berries, some leather and herbs and spices. On the palate fairly full bodied with red and dark berries and herbs and spices again. Firm acidity and bitterness as well as some sticky tannin. Nothing really special, but certainly an ok and clean wine.

  • 2006 La Pèira en Damaisèla Terrasses du Larzac Las Flors de La Pèira 92 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Terrasses du Larzac

Day 1: Concentrated and beautiful bouquet with a lot of dark fruits like blackberries and herbs and spiciness. Same impressions on the palate; dark fruits and sweet spices, some sweet and salty licorice, clove, cocoa, a firm dose of good oak, firm acidity and soft tannin. A bit heat in the finish. Day 2 the wine had mellowed. The acidity seemed less up front, the sweet spices like cinnamon even more present, the tannin silky soft and no more heat in the finish. The score is for day 2, when it was a real beauty. I guess this wine needs a few years longer in the bottle. Around 2018 seems fine.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Il Bruciato 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

Very youthful bouquet with dark cherries and dark berries as well as a pleasant dose of oak. On the palate dark berries, some red fruits, mint, pleasant oak, good acidity and slightly sticky tannin. Juicy and a good concentration. Very youthful still. Kept the leftover at cellar temperature and day 3 the wine was much more harmonious and still really beautiful with a lot of sweet spices and a pleasant balance between acidity and sweetness. The tannin was softer. So my suggestion is drink it now after a lot of air time or cellar it at least until late 2017. Will still be perfectly ok in 2020.

  • 2013 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Il Bruciato 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

In the bouquet cherries, red berries and some herbs and spices as well as some oaky flavors. On the palate red and dark forest fruits, some herbs and spices again, a slight touch of sweetness and good, firm acidity. Round tannin with a good bite. Saved the leftover at cellar temperature and day 3 the wine was still youthful with good fresh acidity. Some licorice appeared as well. The tannin even a little more round, but still youthful. Tasting the 2012 and 2013 day 1 and day 3 beside each other, at this moment it seems that the 2012 is a little more concentrated and the 2013 more elegant. On the other hand the 2012 developed much more quickly, so in the long run the 2013 will probably prove to be the better wine. For now I score them the same: 90. Waiting until at least 2018 is probably wise, but since I could buy them at a bargain price I bought several, so there will probably be a follow up before 2018.

On the palate a firm medium to full bodied wine with dark berries, red berries, sweet spices, some licorice and tar, firm oak., firm acidity as well, a touch of pleasant sweetness and round tannin with a firm bite. • 2003 Château Cap de Mourlin 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

On the palate red fruits, some herbs, chocolate, good acidity and soft and round tannin. Some hours later the tannin became more drying.
