Introduction

All wines were served straight of the bottle, but the bottles were open for several hours and had different fill levels (depending on the amount of glasses served). Unfortunately served in simple stemware comparable to standard INAO glasses.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Penfolds Grange 94 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Deep purple Color. Nose not that intense or expressive as it could be, but still nice. Lots of baby speck, but drinkable now. Massive, but quite elegant Shiraz. Will gain complexity over time, so no need to hurry.

  • 2004 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Excellent, complex nose with lots of smoked meat, stones, fruit, tar, tobacco. On the palate it cannot keep the promise of the scent. Acidity is not very well integrated and it is a bit one-dimensional. I doubt that it gains complexity with more time...

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Viñedos Lacalle y Laorden Rioja Viña el Pisón 95 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

Great Rioja which is surprisingly approachable at the moment. Lots of fruit, minerality, velvet, but present tannins and high, well integrated acidity. This wine will certainly evolve and gain complexity over time but makes a lot of fun at the moment.

  • 2000 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 90 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Drunken parallel to the 2008 el Pison this wine was quite weak. High acidity was not well integrated and makes the wine quite unbalanced. It has concentrated fruit and might be in a dormant phase at the moment but currently it is not a very good Unico.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2008 Romano Dal Forno Amarone della Valpolicella Vigneto di Monte Lodoletta 95 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella

Deep, purple color. Fantastic, intense and developing Amarone nose with layers and layers of different scents: tar, licorice, bacon, fruit, espresso. On the palate the high and very well integrated acidity buffers the 16,5% abv quite well. Very velvety and round taste and a veeery long and beautiful finish. It has a very long and bright future ahead. Would like to taste it again in 5,10 and 15 years.
