Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Tulip yellow. Lemon, smokiness, and some mineral reduction. Full bodied, not a trace of wood, powerful citrus, acid, and salinity. Superb, fresh bottle impressive for its power and focus.

  • 2001 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Moderate ruby without any hint of maturity. Cherry, woodsmoke, and menthol on the nose. Good density and weight but no heaviness. Very lively dark red fruit, a bit of sous bois, no discernible oak, well integrated tannins. I was delighted with the quality here-neither as wood laden as Gros Frère wines can be nor as punishingly austere as young, mind's eye Clos Vougeot.

  • 1996 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Second bottle from a recent auction lot and quite different from the first one. A shade lighter than the 2001 Gros Clos Vougeot, thus a hint of maturity. Lovely aromas of red fruit, smoke, and a bit of green. Equally beguiling medium weight. Over time, it becomes clear that some of the smokiness in this bottle is actually brettanomyces, but it is at a low level that adds some animal complexity without overwhelming the wine. Fine acidity, some tannin to resolve. Much more open and giving than a bottle several months ago. An extremely elegant expression of Clos Vougeot.
