Peachy fruit, some oxidative notes. Medium bodied, a touch lean - verging on thin, orangey fruit, high acidity, some complexity but falls away on finish. **

Beautiful, mature Northern Rhone nose, with blood, iron, earth, underlying black fruit. Medium bodied, lovely on initial entry, fully resolved tannins, balanced acidity, finishes a touch short but a lovely mature Thalabert. ***1/2

Slightly denser and more reticent than the 85, black fruit, tobacco, just a touch of iron - not as complex. Medium bodied, black fruit, resolved tannins, medium length finish. OK **1/2.

A touch closed when first poured this opened out quite nicely to show quite rich black fruit, black olive, a touch of tobacco. Medium/full on the palate, this has more volume and richness than the previous two wines, tobaccoey black fruit, resolved tannins, decent acidity, medium/good length finish. Very good/excellent - ****,

Nose is not giving much away. Better on the palate, with smokey black fruit and a touch of herb but still lacking any real Northern Rhone Syrah character. **

Lovely, discreet nose, dark fruit, touch of spice, floral notes. Medium bodied on the palate, very elegant with cool, dark fruit, touch of black pepper and spice, fine tannins, excellent depth and broadens out nicely on the very good length finish. Excellent, drinking well but absolutely no hurry. ****1/2.

Polished, ripe dark fruit, spice, medium/full, some still quite firm tannin, good length grippy finish. Enjoyable, some potential for improvement with further cellaring *** (1/2)

Lovely, aromatic purple fruits, black olive, attractive savoury bacon notes, floral notes. Medium bodied, characterful, harmonious, savoury, fine but still perceptible tannins, fresh acidity, good length finish. Excellent and drinking really well. ****1/2.

A touch closed, brooding black fruit, touch of black pepper. Medium/full, rich black fruit, firm tannins, slightly more expressive and peppery than on the nose but in need of more time. Difficult to read at this point. **(**).

Rich, thick, some peppery fruit but a touch baked and gloopy. *1/2

Lovely, developed nose - earthy, savoury, iron, blood, vestiges of underlying black fruit, perhaps just a hint of soy but very much in the background. Medium bodied, resolved, harmonious, bloody, earthy fruit, bacon, spice, decent length, lovely. Drink now. ****

Notes on (and memory of) this one a touch sparse - dark, spicy fruit, medium/full bodied, quite rich and structured but with attractive peppery black fruit, needs a bit more time. ***(*)

2010 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph Blanc Les Oliviers
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Attractive, creamy, orangey fruit, floral notes, aromatic. Medium/full bodied, lovely vibrant acidity, orange tinged fruit, a touch of mineral on the very good length finish. Maybe just a touch of heat at the tail end if you really look for it, but this remains excellent ****.
