Introduction

Every participant had to bring a wine of the theme. We did not know which wines were brought by the others. All wines were tasted blind, also without knowing when the wine you brought was poured.
This occasion the host had most of the wines.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1986 Chateau Musar 88 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Fairly light carmine. In the bouquet a little barnyard and figs. On the palate plums, dark cherries, some strawberries and apple syrup. Fairly light bodied and completely dissolved tannin. Elegant and completely mature wine (I think). But the opinions about this wine were quite diverse; from too old to mature, or even with some more future. Anyway, for the pleasure at the moment I scored it 88.

  • 1988 Chateau Musar 90 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Fairly light garnet red. A little barnyard and musty in the bouquet just after uncorking, but then came some smoke, tobacco and leather. On the palate also some smoke and earthy impressions, red plums and strawberries. The tannin is soft and mild, but still offering a pleasant bite. Juicy and fairly complex wine. Fully mature now.

  • 1993 Chateau Musar 91 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Light red brown. Some metal in the mature bouquet and also leather, tobacco, meat and some barnyard. Same on the palate where also licorice and apple syrup appear. Pleasant acidity and a long finish. Especially the bouquet is beautiful and complex. Great and mature wine.

  • 1997 Chateau Musar 89 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Light carmine/blood red. Slightly smoky bouquet. On the palate red as well as black forest fruits, leather and apple syrup. A firm amount of acidity and soft tannin. A short finish which keeps the score low. Full bodied wine. Ready now and the next few years.

  • 1998 Chateau Musar 89 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Light carmine/brown. The bouquet is mature and shows some VA. On the palate the VA is not as present as you would expect. A lot of very juicy dark fruits, some licorice and some apple syrup. Good concentration. Ready now and for several years to come.

  • 2000 Chateau Musar 91 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Complex bouquet with ripe forest fruits, cedar, leather and tobacco and graphite. Same on the palate. Good juice. The tannin has a good bite and is just a little bit edgy. Some green paprika notes. Good acidity. The wine reminds me a bit of Bdx, St. Estèphe. Still youthful.

  • 2002 Chateau Musar 90 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Dark red. The bouquet shows black fruits but is still a bit locked. Full bodied wine with a firm dose of black fruit juice and a lot of laurel and licorice. The tannin is beautifully ripe and round. At this moment the wine doesn't show its real complexity. Needs another 3+ years probably. 90+

  • 2003 Chateau Musar Hochar Père & Fils 89 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Beautiful bouquet with strawberries, oak and some herbs. On the palate strawberries and cherries and also some sweetness. The tannin is beautifully soft. A lighter style than Musar, but certainly elegant and refined.

  • 2003 Chateau Musar 91 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Dark and youthful color. VA and leather on the nose. Very concentrated in the mouth with loads of black fruit juice and licorice. Firm, but round tannin and a lot of bitterness. It will improve with ageing. 3-4 years to start with.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 1997 Chateau Musar Blanc 88 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

A little bit oxidative on the nose as well as the palate. This gives the impression of nuts. There are also minerals. A special wine. Compared to the 1999 this 1997 doesn't offer the same body, structure and complexity.

  • 1999 Chateau Musar Blanc 89 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Some honey and a bit smoky on the nose. Minerals and nuts as well. On the palate some yellow fruits, but the wine is not really fruity. There is oak as well. Full bodied, even a bit fat and a long finish. Complex and special wine.
