Introduction

The idea with my friends was best of the best. Yquem 1937, DRC La Tache 2005, DRC Montrachet 2007, Cristal 1979, Comtes de Champagne 1976 and Latour 1982 were the stars with some "friends".

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 1979 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 98 Points

    France, Champagne

The capsule was a little bit oxidized but the filling level was almost perfect, great fine bubbles

Citrus is still in nose and palate, typical matured champagne signs as roasted nuts, almonds, dates, figs, perfect refreshing acidity structure, so balanced, so long, the finish is after macadamia nuts and fresh baken brioche but there is always a vivid citric note, one of the best champagnes I have ever had. Nearly all 79ers deliver, 98-99

  • 1976 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 94 Points

    France, Champagne

I love this champagne, the first encouter was my most impressive champagne experience I have ever had. in the last three years I had the luck to enjoy it three more times. I thought this would be the champagne of the day but this time it lost clearly against Cristal 1979.

fruit cake, apricot compote, nuts, brioche, still some bubbles, but not the length of Cristal, the "weakest" 76 CdC, still a great wine, 94

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2007 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

3 hours of decantation, needs one day of decantation. It is a giant. It is the most concentrated white wine I have ever had. Razorsharp acidity, citrus and beginning nuts in the finish, the wood is perfectly integrated. In spite of the density the aftertaste is very elegant. Compared to J. Prieur's Montrachet 2009 a few weeks before this wine is magnificient. At the moment 99, but in 10 years the perfection not impossible

  • 2005 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Barolo meets Bordeaux with some Northern Rhone but the result is a perfect Burgundy wine.

3 hours of decantation was hardly enough, probably 12 hours would be ok.

Very spicy, cassis, violet, roses liquer, red berries, unbelievable power, white pepper like a Hermitage, for me it is Mike Tyson behind a Kate Moss face. at least 20-30 years ahead, 98-99

Flight 6 (1 Note)

  • 1982 Château Latour Grand Vin 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Decanted for 4 hours, IN filling level

Typical Pauillac, cassis, graphite, red berries, phantastic acidity, ripe tannins, silky but still alive and giving a great backbone, cedarwood, cigarbox, licorice, six months before from MG fresher and longer in the finish, this time only 98, at least 20 more years before reaching his top

Flight 7 (1 Note)

  • 1937 Château d'Yquem 100 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

It was the WOTN. It was the most amazing wine I've ever had.

A perfect bottle of my friend Thomas Helling. All words can't describe the feeling. We had it together with foie gras, cheese and dessert. Fantastic in all ways. It was all the time a giant but with such a balanced acidity. Always fresh with never ending finish.

Malt, nougat, bittersweet chocolate, dried fruits as figs, dates, apricot and peaches, brioche, bread crust, some sea salt, herbals and always some citrus, alcohol perfectly integrated, will survive at least 30 more years

Closing

A great Cristal 1979 beating CdC 1976, my most concentrated White wine ( DRC Montrachet 2007), a phantastic La tache 2005 (Bx meets Barolo), a great Latour 1982 and the best wine I have ever had YQUEM 1937
