Weekly tasting group #222; A mixed set fully blind tasted.

Introduction

Everybody had to bring two wines to taste fully blind by the other participants. The order of the flight is just a wild guess because we don’t know which wines the other participants brought. We try to start with light and simple and older, to more full bodied, more complex and younger. Someone starts and then the others follow when they think it is the right moment. And -to be honest- in most cases it works nicely.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2015 Saint Cosme Little James' Basket Press White 87 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc

The bouquet is very floral and shows yellow peach and bananas. On the palate bananas, sweet and sour pineapple, good and fresh citrus acidity (lemon). Overall a really tasty and pleasant wine with a good length.

  • 2014 Domaine d'Orfeuilles Vouvray Silex d'Orfeuilles 88 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

In the bouquet white and yellow fruits. Still a bit locked. On the palate white fruits, green apples and mild citrus. Grapefruit in the finish. Some minerals as well. The wine is still quite locked and not very expressive. Give it some years of ageing. 2019+?... For tonight 87 – 88+?

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2014 Clos Capitoro Ajaccio 83 Points

    France, Corsica, Ajaccio

Special unfamiliar bouquet with herbs and some strawberries. On the palate cherries, metal, red currants and their acidity, slightly sticky tannin and a short finish.

  • 2014 Château de Villeneuve Saumur-Champigny Clos de la Bienboire 87 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

The bouquet is very youthful with cherry/raspberry/blackberry yoghurt. On the palate blackberry juice with some bell pepper. There is some pleasant sweetness and it is in good balance with the acidity and round tannin. Clean wine, but I would prefer this wine somewhat older. Around 2020? Need to taste again by then… 86 - 87

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Gloria 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Beautiful and mature bouquet with cassis, earth, graphite, vanilla, tobacco, cigar box and some bell pepper. On the palate mature, dark forest fruits, cassis, earth, beautifully fresh acidity and slightly drying tannin. Fully mature no and no extreme hurry. I fully agree with Jeff Leve’s note, but not with his score ;-). There is complexity and some finesse. My score 89 – 90.

  • 2003 Château Lynch-Moussas 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Bouquet with black and red forest fruits, some bell pepper and vanilla. On the palate dark and red forest fruits as well, salty licorice, bell pepper, some sweetness, ok acidity and slightly sticky tannin. For a Bordeaux the wine has quite much sweetness (because of the hot vintage), but it is a pleasurable wine which is in its maturity stage now. Will probably drink nicely until 2020. 88 – 89

Flight 6 (1 Note)

  • 2011 Domaine Cosse Maisonneuve Cahors La Fage 88 Points

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

In the bouquet ripe dark and red berries, e.g. blackberries, lavender and a bit rustic. On the palate a concentrated wine with ripe red berries and blackberries, good medium plus acidity and round tannin with a good bite. Well made, full bodied wine. Young maturity stage now. Will drink nicely until 2021+. 88+
