Tasting via Coravin of a load of European whites that E wanted to run by her staff as an education piece to make sure they were in relatively good nick and demonstrated suitable typicity…
So many duds! shocking!! that Caves des Clairmonts Crozes Hermitage was probably my wine of the night...
Few out of condition or just plain tired wines here. Still it was most educational. I like older or more matured wines but some of these whites had more than done their dash. Reminded me of drinking some gavi de gavi that I'd cellared and, upon opening, that sense of wistful regret...at least I hadn't bought these myself...
2010 Bodegas Angel Rodriguez Verdejo Rueda Martínsancho Flawed

2010 Bodegas Angel Rodriguez Verdejo Rueda Martínsancho Flawed
Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda
Peach and fruit forward with slight herbs and wet stone…sour and quite tart, lacks fruit, quite unpleasant…too old or just plain dead on the palate

2010 Bodegas Angel Rodriguez Verdejo Rueda Martínsancho
Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda
herbaceous with stone fruit, cream, wet stone, dry but some fruit carry and a little mid palate grip and fresh acidity. Okay.

2013 Domaine Gerard Fiou Sancerre
France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
Quite modern (unripe?) Kiwi style, green notes, capsicum, cats pee…nice on the palate than the nose pimples. Quite pleasant a not as overtly unripe as the nose.

2010 Moreau-Naudet & Fils Petit Chablis Flawed
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Petit Chablis
Very forward with oxidised and honeyed notes…surely it shouldn't taste this forward at this age from this vintage? FLAW

2010 Moreau-Naudet & Fils Petit Chablis
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Petit Chablis
Honeyed again but with some citrus and buttery notes…more apple on the palate with the honey, slightly mineral and finishes a touch bitter...but this is a bit more what I was expecting...

2010 Clos Floridene Blanc
France, Bordeaux, Graves
nutty and toasty with muted green fruits, butter and very slight honey…more of the same on the palate with muted fruit…I thought it might blossom a little with air but this did not prove the case. Disappointing.

2011 Pardas Penedès Rupestris
Spain, Catalunya, Penedès
muted minerals, slightly meaty and reductive with agitation…not out of condition but, like a few of the wines we've tried, tired and old. Should have been drunk a two or three years ago.

2011 Cave des Clairmonts Crozes-Hermitage Classique Blanc
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
Bees wax with quite muted stone fruit (especially peach) underpinned by herbs and cream…a little bitter and muted from a flavour perspective but fleshy and juicy. More in the savoury than the fruit spectrum. Little non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the medium plus length. Quite pleasant but a drink up reasonably soon for me.
